Chapter 4 - THE OSCAR-WORTHY PIVOT

The gust of freezing, rain-swept wind that rushed into the grand foyer felt like a physical blow.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the violent lightning of the autumn storm, was Marcus Vance.
He was a man who commanded gravity.
Standing six-foot-three, his broad shoulders filled the entrance. He wore a flawless, bespoke black tuxedo, the bow tie perfectly straight, his dark hair slightly damp from the rain.
He was the architect of the Vance corporate empire. A man who analyzed hostile takeovers and dismantled billionaire rivals before his morning coffee.
The moment the heavy doors opened, the entire atmosphere in the foyer underwent a terrifying, instantaneous transformation.
Victoria Sterling’s reaction was not one of panic.
It was a masterclass in psychological manipulation.
In a fraction of a millisecond, the sadistic, venomous predator standing on Chloe’s chest completely vanished.
Victoria snatched her stiletto off Chloe.
Her face crumpled. Her dark eyes went wide, instantly welling up with thick, desperate tears. Her lower lip began to tremble violently.
She turned toward the doorway, her hands flying to her face in an expression of absolute, manufactured horror.
"Marcus!" Victoria cried out.
Her voice cracked perfectly. It was the shrill, terrified shriek of a woman who had just survived a brutal attack.
She stumbled forward, her red satin gown swishing as she ran across the black and white tiles, throwing herself directly toward the man in the doorway.
"Marcus, thank God you're here!" Victoria sobbed hysterically, crashing into his chest and burying her face against the lapels of his expensive tuxedo.
Chloe lay on the floor, gasping for air as the pressure was finally lifted from her chest.
Through her blurred, tear-filled vision, she watched the surreal, horrifying performance unfolding near the entrance.
Victoria was clinging to Marcus like a lifeline, her shoulders shaking with fake, manufactured sobs.
"She went crazy, Marcus!" Victoria wailed, pointing a trembling, manicured finger back at Chloe on the floor. "I just came to drop off the Sterling merger files for your father, and she snapped! She started screaming about how you were going to leave her! She threw the crystal vase at me! I thought she was going to kill me!"
Chloe’s heart plummeted into her stomach.
She looked down at herself.
She was lying on the floor in an oversized, messy sweater.
She was surrounded by broken glass and spilled water.
And worst of all, her right hand was clutching a jagged, bloody shard of crystal, her own blood dripping onto the white marble tiles.
To anyone walking into that room blindly, it looked exactly like a crime scene where Chloe was the aggressor.
He’s going to believe her, Chloe thought, a suffocating wave of despair washing over her. She’s a Sterling. They’ve known each other for twenty years. I look like a madwoman.
"Marcus..." Chloe whispered weakly, her voice failing her. She tried to push herself up, but her injured shoulder gave out, and she slumped back against the freezing marble.
Marcus stood in the doorway.
He did not wrap his arms around the weeping woman clinging to his chest.
He did not rush forward to comfort Victoria.
Marcus Vance was not a man who reacted to noise. He reacted to data.
His dark, predatory eyes swept across the grand foyer with the cold, diagnostic precision of a forensic investigator.
He processed the scene in micro-seconds.
He saw the shattered Baccarat vase.
He saw the trajectory of the glass spread across the floor—not thrown toward the door where Victoria stood, but swept backward off the console table.
He saw Victoria’s immaculate red satin gown. Not a single drop of water on it. Not a single tear in the fabric. Her makeup was flawless beneath the tears.
And then, his eyes locked onto his wife.
He saw Chloe.
His beautiful, kind-hearted Chloe, who spent her weekends volunteering at animal shelters and who apologized to the staff when she asked for a glass of water.
He saw her lying on the freezing marble.
He saw her body curled fiercely, protectively around their unborn child.
He saw the fear in her eyes, and the blood dripping from her hand as she held a piece of glass in desperate self-defense.
A dark, terrifying shadow crossed Marcus’s face.

The air in the room seemed to drop below freezing.
A muscle feathered in his tight, clenched jaw.
