Chapter 3 - THE GRAVITY OF CRUELTY

Time does not move at a constant speed.

Ask anyone who has ever braced for an impact they knew they could not avoid.

For Chloe Vance, the world slowed into a terrifying, agonizing crawl.

As her bare heel slipped on the water and her oversized cream sweater snagged on the heavy mahogany table, she felt the sickening sensation of zero gravity taking hold.

She was falling backward.

Beneath her was the unforgiving, imported black and white checkered marble of the foyer.

In that fractured fraction of a second, Chloe’s mind did not flash to her life, her husband, or the wealth she had married into.

Her entire universe condensed into a singular, primal imperative: Protect the baby.

With a desperate, twisting jerk of her spine, Chloe forced her body to rotate mid-air.

She threw her right shoulder downward, sacrificing her own bones to shield her swollen, eight-month pregnant belly from taking the direct force of the fall.

CRACK.

The impact was deafening.

Her shoulder slammed into the freezing marble floor with a force that sent a shockwave of blinding, white-hot pain shooting up her neck and down her spine.

The air was violently punched from her lungs in a hollow gasp.

For a moment, the grand foyer went entirely dark.

A high-pitched ringing echoed in her ears, drowning out the sound of the autumn thunderstorm raging against the mansion's windows outside.

Chloe lay on the cold tiles, her vision blurring, her chest heaving as she desperately tried to drag oxygen back into her paralyzed lungs.

Then, she felt it.

A sharp, frantic kick against her ribs.

The baby was moving. The baby was alive.

A ragged sob of relief broke past Chloe’s lips. She immediately curled inward, wrapping both of her arms fiercely around her stomach, turning herself into a human shield on the floor.

"Pathetic."

The single word cut through the ringing in Chloe’s ears.

Slowly, her vision cleared.

Looming over her, silhouetted against the blinding light of the two-tiered crystal chandelier, was Victoria Sterling.

The blood-red satin of Victoria’s designer gown swayed gently around her ankles.

She did not look horrified by what she had just caused.

She did not reach down to help.

She looked like a goddess of vengeance admiring her own handiwork.

Victoria took a slow, deliberate step forward.

Her black designer stiletto clicked against a white marble tile, stopping mere inches from Chloe’s hip.

"You look exactly like what you are, Chloe," Victoria whispered, her voice dripping with a sadistic, venomous pleasure. "A charity case. A commoner who tripped on a floor she doesn't even know how to walk on."

Chloe gritted her teeth, her shoulder screaming in agony as she tried to push herself backward, away from the woman towering above her.

But she was heavy, exhausted, and trapped in the center of the vast, open space.

Victoria smiled—a cold, terrifying curvature of the lips that lacked any human empathy.

Slowly, deliberately, Victoria raised her right leg.

The slit in her red satin gown parted, revealing her long, perfectly toned leg.

Before Chloe could process what was happening, Victoria brought her foot down.

The razor-sharp, needle-thin black heel of Victoria’s stiletto pressed directly into the center of Chloe’s chest, resting dangerously high above her pregnant belly.

Chloe gasped, her eyes widening in pure, unfiltered horror.

Victoria leaned her weight forward.

The sharp heel dug into the soft cream knit of Chloe’s sweater, pressing painfully against her sternum. It wasn't enough to pierce the skin, but the pressure was absolute, suffocating, and terrifyingly deliberate.

"Know your place," Victoria commanded, her voice dropping into a lethal, quiet hiss.

Chloe stared up at the woman standing on her chest.

The sheer, unfathomable cruelty of the act paralyzed her. This was not a corporate rivalry. This was not high-society jealousy. This was pure, unadulterated evil. Victoria was willing to threaten an unborn child just to satisfy her own bruised ego.

"Get... off... me," Chloe choked out, her hands flying up to grab Victoria’s ankle.

But Victoria only pressed down harder, leaning her flawless face closer to Chloe’s.

"You think Marcus will care?" Victoria taunted, her dark eyes shining with psychotic glee. "When he walks in here, I will tell him you had a hysterical breakdown. I will tell him you threw the vase at me and slipped. Who do you think he will believe? A woman whose family owns half the city's equity, or a pregnant, unstable school teacher who can't even stand on her own two feet?"

Tears of physical pain and overwhelming terror spilled over Chloe’s cheeks, mixing with the water from the shattered vase.

She was trapped under the heel of a monster.

But deep within Chloe’s chest, beneath the fear, a different emotion began to ignite.

It was the primal, ferocious fire of a mother cornered.

Chloe’s hand reached out across the marble floor, her fingers blindly searching the wet tiles.

Her skin brushed against something sharp.

A jagged, heavy shard of broken Baccarat crystal from the shattered vase.

Chloe closed her fist around it.

The sharp edge sliced instantly into her palm. Warm blood welled up, coating her fingers, but she did not let go. She gripped the glass weapon tighter, preparing to drive it directly into Victoria’s leg to protect her baby.

She braced herself. She took a breath.

And then, the heavy, reinforced oak double doors at the front of the mansion swung open with a massive, groaning thud.
