Chapter 8 - The Vanishing Patient

At 3:15 PM, the marble lobby of the County Courthouse was swarming with reporters.

Isabella Vance was walking out the side doors, flanked by four high-priced defense attorneys in thousand-dollar suits. A temporary bail order had been granted on a technicality regarding the chain of custody of the hospital’s security hard drives.

She wore a crisp black tailored trench coat, dark sunglasses covering her bruised cheek, her posture aristocratic and completely unbothered. She paused briefly in front of the flashing cameras.

“This is an unfortunate family tragedy born of my sister-in-law’s severe postpartum psychosis,” Isabella stated smoothly into the wall of microphones, her voice oozing synthetic empathy. “I was attacked while trying to deliver her medication. The truth will be fully vindicated in court.”

She stepped into a waiting black limousine, the tinted windows rolling up, shutting out the roar of the press.

Inside the car sat her personal fixer, a ruthless corporate attorney named Robert Vance.

“The private jet is fueled at Teterboro,” Robert muttered, opening a leather briefcase containing three alternate passports and five million dollars in bearer bonds. “Flight plan filed for Dubai. By the time Marcus’s legal team files an appeal, you’ll be outside the jurisdiction of any US extradition treaty.”

Isabella took off her sunglasses, her lips curving into a triumphant smirk. “Did you wipe the mechanic’s phone?”

“Burned and thrown into the East River,” Robert nodded. “Marcus has nothing left but circumstantial hospital gossip. You won, Isabella.”

She let out a long, satisfied sigh, leaning back against the leather seats as the limousine sped onto the highway toward the airport. She had survived. The empire would still be hers.

Then, the car suddenly lurched to a halt.

Isabella was thrown forward against the partition. “What is going on? Why are we stopping?” she snapped at the driver.

The driver didn’t answer.

Outside, the highway ahead was completely blocked by eight unmarked black tactical SUVs.

Behind them, four more heavy vehicles boxed the limousine in, their sirens wailing with a deafening, unified scream.

The doors of the SUVs burst open. Dozens of men in dark windbreakers with yellow block letters—**FBI** and **DOJ SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS**—advanced on the limousine, heavy assault rifles trained on the windshield.

“DRIVER, TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND STEP OUT OF THE VEHICLE WITH YOUR HANDS VISIBLE!” a megaphone boomed.

Isabella’s breath hitched in her throat. “Robert… call the judge. Call him right now!”

Robert was staring out the window, his face completely drained of color. “Isabella… that’s not local police. That’s the Federal Organized Crime and Financial Fraud Division.”

His phone buzzed. It was an emergency news broadcast notification.

Robert tapped the screen, and Isabella looked over his shoulder.

A live press conference was playing on CNN. Standing at the federal podium in Washington D.C. was the United States Deputy Attorney General. And standing directly beside him via secure video feed from her hospital room was me—holding baby Hope in my arms, with the entire Swiss financial trail displayed on the digital screen behind us.

*“At 2:45 PM today,”* the Deputy AG announced, *“a sealed federal indictment was unsealed against Isabella Vance for multiple counts of attempted murder, interstate wire fraud, and the premeditated assassination of Vance Capital’s former Chairman. All domestic and international assets have been permanently seized under the RICO Act.”*

The limousine door was violently ripped open from the outside.
