Chapter 4 - The Severed Cable

The basement level of St. Jude’s Private Hospital was a labyrinth of humid concrete tunnels, humming air-conditioning ducts, and fluorescent tubes that flickered like dying stars.
Isabella knew this hospital better than anyone. Her family’s pharmaceutical foundation had funded the new surgical pavilion five years ago; she held master keycards to every administrative terminal on the property.
She rounded the corner near the Server Node B, her bare feet black with grime and speckled with droplets of Khloe’s blood. Her breath tore from her throat in jagged, burning gasps. Her mind raced with catastrophic calculations.
If that video leaked, it wouldn't just be an assault charge.
The audio had captured her admitting to tampering with the brake lines on Khloe’s Mercedes. It had captured her naming the exact chemical compound she used. Under federal law, that was premeditated attempted double homicide, corporate sabotage, and conspiracy. Her trust fund, her board seat, her Manhattan penthouse—all of it would be incinerated before sunrise.
She slammed her golden master keycard against the electronic scanner of Server Room 04.
*BEEP-CHIRP.*
The magnetic lock released. She dove inside, slamming the heavy steel fire door behind her and throwing the manual deadbolt.
Inside, the room was freezing, cooled by massive industrial fans blowing across racks of black server towers with thousands of green and blue lights dancing like constellations.
“Where is Suite 402… where is it?!” she muttered hysterically, clawing her way down Row 7, where the private VIP surveillance arrays were routed.
She found the dedicated DVR terminal mounted on a steel desk. The monitor was glowing. On the split-screen display, Camera 4B showed the empty, blood-stained floor of Suite 402, with paramedics wheeling me out on a gurney. A red icon in the bottom corner read: *BUFFERING LIVE CLOUD UPLOAD - 84% COMPLETE.*
“No, no, no!” Isabella shrieked.
She looked for a keyboard, but the terminal was locked with a twenty-character cryptographic password. The cloud backup was uploading to an offsite server owned by Marcus’s private security firm.
Outside the heavy door, a deafening crash shook the steel frame.
*BOOM!*
“ISABELLA!” Marcus’s voice roared from the hallway. *BOOM!* Another brutal kick slammed against the metal. “OPEN THIS DAMN DOOR!”
Panic turned to sheer madness. Isabella grabbed an emergency fire axe mounted in a red glass box on the concrete wall. She shattered the glass with her elbow, ignoring the deep cuts on her forearm, and swung the heavy steel blade with both arms.
*CRACK!*
The blade bit into the main fiber-optic conduit leading out of the server rack, severing thick bundles of glass and copper in a shower of blue electrical sparks.
The terminal screen flickered violently. The upload progress froze at *91%*.
“Try watching it now, Marcus,” Isabella laughed through her tears, the axe slipping from her bloody hands as she leaned against the server rack. “It’s gone. It’s all gone.”
Then, a cold, automated voice spoke from the desktop terminal:
*“FIBER CONNECTION SEVERED. AUTOMATIC FAILSAFE ENGAGED. DUAL SATELLITE UPLINK ACTIVATED. UPLOAD RESUMED: 100% COMPLETE. FILE ARCHIVED TO SECURE EXTERNAL VAULT.”*
Isabella’s laughter died in her throat.

Behind her, the steel door groaned, and with a violent screech of tearing metal, the lock sheared completely off.
