Chapter 5 - The Playback Room

Marcus stepped through the ruined doorway, a heavy steel fire extinguisher dangling from his right hand. His knuckles were raw and split, dripping crimson onto his white cuffs.
He didn’t look like a CEO anymore. He looked like an executioner.
Behind him stood three private security operatives from his personal detail, tactical weapons drawn, laser sights painting Isabella’s chest in piercing red dots.
“Step away from the terminal, Isabella,” Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm. The rage had cooled into something much more dangerous: absolute, frozen hatred.
Isabella backed away slowly until her spine hit the freezing aluminum casing of the server racks. She raised her bloodied hands, trying to summon that pathetic, innocent pout that had gotten her out of trouble their entire childhood.
“Marcus… please,” she choked out, her voice trembling. “I’m sick. You know I’ve been under so much pressure with the merger. I wasn’t in my right mind. She provoked me. Khloe told me she was going to cut me out of the family legacy forever—she told me she hated you!”
Marcus didn't blink. He walked past her as if she were a ghost, stepping up to the glowing monitor.
One of his security technicians slid into the chair, fingers dancing across a portable bypass keyboard. “Sir, satellite packet retrieved. Audio and video feeds are fully decrypted and rendered. Playing from timestamp 14:02:11.”
“Play it,” Marcus commanded.
The speakers mounted above the desk crackled to life.
Isabella’s voice filled the room, crystalline, razor-sharp, completely devoid of the hysterical innocence she was currently faking:
*“Did you really think a few smashed guardrails on Route 9 would get rid of you, Khloe? You always were an annoying cockroach…”*
Marcus closed his eyes for a split second, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently under his cheek.
The video played in high-definition 4K. The camera captured every angle: Isabella drawing the syringe, the cold, sadistic smirk on her face, the way she gripped Khloe by her hair, and then—the most damning confession of all.
*“I cut the brake fluid line myself at the charity gala, Khloe. Just like I swapped Father’s heart medication three years ago. The old man was too weak to run Vance Capital, and Marcus is too sentimental. But you… you had to go and put a real heir in your belly.”*
The security guards in the room fell into a stunned silence.
Marcus slowly turned his head to look at Isabella. The color in his face was gone.
“Father didn’t die of an arrhythmia,” Marcus said, the words barely louder than a whisper, yet carrying the weight of a death sentence. “You murdered him.”
Isabella’s lips trembled. She looked around at the guns pointed at her heart, at the screen replaying her brutal assault on a pregnant woman, at the brother whose life she had systematically poisoned.
“He was going to disinherit us, Marcus!” she screamed, breaking down completely, clawing at her own hair. “He was giving everything to the public foundation! I did it for us! For the Vance name!”
“You didn’t do it for the Vance name,” Marcus said, pulling his phone from his pocket. He dialed a direct line to the State Attorney General. “You did it because you are a monster. And you are going to spend the rest of your pathetic life in a six-by-eight concrete cage.”
Before Isabella could lunge, two security operatives tackled her to the floor, pinning her face-down onto the dirty concrete and snapping heavy steel zip-cuffs around her wrists.
At that moment, Marcus’s phone buzzed with an incoming alert from OR 3.
*“CRITICAL ALERT: Patient Khloe Vance entering hypovolemic shock. Fetal heartbeat lost. Immediate surgical intervention underway.”*

Marcus dropped the phone, turned his back on Isabella’s screams, and ran back toward the light.
