Chapter 17 - The Shadow in the Mirror

The world seemed to stop spinning. The roar of the Hudson River, the whistling of the freezing wind, the countdown ticking in my head—everything faded into a deafening, suffocating silence.

*Julian.*

The trusted family pediatrician. The man who had stayed by my hospital bed for thirty-six hours during my emergency labor. The man Marcus had personally funded to build a private neonatal research wing. The man we had left alone in the medical suite with our defenseless three-month-old daughter.

"You... you're working together," I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth.

"Working together?" Isabella laughed, throwing her head back, her emerald earrings catching the glare of the spotlight. "Khloe, you truly are an outsider. You know nothing about the Vance bloodline. Julian isn't just my partner. He’s my brother. We share the same mother—the woman Marcus’s father discarded like trash after he used her family to build his fortune."

She raised the glass vial of golden antidote between her manicured fingers, letting the spotlight illuminate the liquid.

"Marcus isn't dying from some mysterious foreign poison," Isabella purred, taking a step back toward the shadow of the shipping containers. "Julian formulated it in the Vance Tower lab using Marcus’s own genetic profile. There is no other antidote in existence. This single vial is the only thing standing between your husband and an agonizing death."

"Give it to me!" I screamed, drawing the Walther PPK from my coat and leveling it directly at her forehead. "Tell Julian to put my daughter down, or I swear to God I will put a bullet through your skull right here!"

Isabella didn't flinch. She didn't even raise her gun.

Instead, she simply opened her fingers.

The glass vial slipped from her hand.

*NO!*

My body moved on pure instinct. I didn't shoot. I lunged forward, sliding across the wet, splintered timber of the pier, diving headfirst onto the concrete. My hands slammed into the gravel, my palms scraping raw, my fingers snapping shut around the falling glass cylinder just half an inch before it smashed against the iron rail.

*CRACK!*

A gunshot echoed through the pier.

A bullet ripped through the meat of my left shoulder, spinning me onto my back. The agony was instant—a white-hot iron brand searing through muscle and bone. Blood instantly soaked through my coat, hot and thick in the freezing air.

I rolled behind a steel stanchion, gasping for breath, clutching the unbroken vial of golden fluid against my chest with my good hand.

Through the pouring rain, I heard the throbbing roar of twin jet turbine engines spooling up from the water.

I looked out past the pier. A high-speed luxury military hydrofoil—a black stealth vessel designed to evade coast guard radar—was idling in the deep channel of the Hudson. On the stern deck, illuminated by red tactical lights, stood Dr. Julian Croft.

And in his arms was a temperature-controlled tactical transport pod.

Inside that clear acrylic dome, wrapped in a blue medical blanket, was Hope.

"MOMMY'S COMING, HOPE!" I screamed, pushing myself up from the bloody concrete, my vision blurring with pain and blood loss.

"She can't hear you, darling!" Isabella’s voice called out from the boarding ramp of the hydrofoil as it began to retract. "We're taking the G650 from Teterboro Airport in twenty minutes! By tomorrow morning, your daughter will be registered under the Morales trust in an unextraditable territory! You can save Marcus, or you can chase us into the sky! But you can’t do both!"

The hydrofoil’s water jets engaged with a deafening roar, churning the black waters of the Hudson into a frothing white fury as the stealth boat launched forward, disappearing into the blinding sleet at fifty knots.

I stood on the edge of the pier, clutching the antidote to my bleeding chest.

*18 MINUTES TO FLATLINE.*

I looked at the vial in my hand. Then I looked at the black wake disappearing down the river toward New Jersey.

My husband was dying thirty blocks away.

My daughter was being smuggled to an airstrip to be stolen forever.

I reached for my communicator, choking back the blood rising in my throat. "Briggs... get the MedEvac chopper to the 84th floor right now. I have the antidote."

"And what about you, Mrs. Vance?!" Briggs yelled through the static.

I looked down at the Walther PPK in my hand, wiping the rain and blood from the sights.

"Fuel the Gulfstream Interceptor," I said, my voice hardening into pure steel. "We’re going to thirty thousand feet."
