Chapter 10 - The Price of Survival

Three months later.

The ocean breeze rolled off the cliffs of Montauk, rustling the white linen curtains of our private coastal estate.

I sat on the wide teak veranda, the warm afternoon sun kissing my skin. In my arms, Hope was sound asleep, her cheeks plump and pink, her tiny fist curled around my index finger. The physical scars on my abdomen had healed into a thin silver line—a permanent reminder of the war we had survived, and the victory we had won.

The glass door slid open, and Marcus walked out carrying two glasses of iced tea.

He looked younger. The tension that had permanently lined his forehead for the last five years had melted away. He sat down beside me, putting an arm around my shoulders, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head and then to Hope’s forehead.

“The judge finalized the sentencing this morning,” Marcus said softly.

I looked at him. “What did she get?”

“Life without the possibility of parole at ADX Florence,” Marcus replied. “No appeals. No privileges. The board of directors has been completely restructured, the corrupt assets liquidated, and seventy percent of Isabella’s personal holdings have been transferred into a permanent educational trust under Hope’s name.”

I looked down at our daughter. She let out a soft, contented sigh in her sleep, completely oblivious to the empire she would one day inherit, and the venomous snake that had tried to extinguish her light before she could even take her first breath.

“Are you okay, Khloe?” Marcus asked, his thumb gently caressing my cheek. “After everything she did to you?”

I looked out across the endless blue horizon of the Atlantic Ocean.

I remembered the cold marble floor of Suite 402. I remembered the sharp pain of that red heel. I remembered the terror of feeling my daughter’s heartbeat fade into silence.

And then I remembered the tiny, blinking red light in the ceiling.

“I’m more than okay,” I smiled, resting my head against Marcus’s chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat under his shirt. “She thought I was just an outsider who got lucky. She forgot that a mother will burn down an entire empire to protect her child.”

Hope stirred in my arms, opening her bright, brilliant blue eyes—Marcus’s eyes—and smiled at the warm sunlight.

We were safe. The dynasty was secure. And the darkness that had haunted the Vance family for generations was finally, completely destroyed.
