Chapter 14 - The Poisoned Gala

The Vance Tower in Midtown Manhattan rose eighty-five stories into the smoggy night sky, an obsidian obelisk wrapped in dazzling neon and corporate opulence.

Outside, a red carpet stretched down 5th Avenue, flanked by hundreds of paparazzi flashing cameras, velvet ropes, and Manhattan elite arriving in fleets of Maybachs and Bentleys. It was the annual Vance Foundation Gala—the crown jewel of New York high society.

Marcus brought the armored SUV into the underground executive tunnel beneath the tower, bypassing the media circus entirely.

"Briggs," Marcus spoke into his encrypted headset as the heavy blast doors sealed shut behind us. "Have the private medical floor locked down. Post four snipers on the mezzanine. If anyone without Tier-1 biometric clearance breathes within ten feet of Khloe and Hope, shoot to kill. Do not ask for identification."

"Understood, Mr. Vance," the commander responded.

Two armed security guards escorted us out of the vehicle and straight into the private executive elevator. I held Hope tightly, wrapped inside a heavy wool coat, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against the smooth steel walls as the elevator rocketed up toward the penthouse ballroom.

"You should stay in the subterranean bunker with Hope," Marcus said softly, turning to me, his hand resting on my cheek. "It's safe down there. The blast doors can withstand a cruise missile."

"No," I said, looking directly into his blue eyes. There was no fear left in me now. Only the cold, calculated fury of a mother whose child had been hunted like an animal. "Suite 402 taught me one thing, Marcus: hiding in the dark just makes you a cornered target. Isabella thinks I'm a weak, disposable outsider who only knows how to cry. If she's in this building, she needs to see me. She needs to know I'm not running."

Marcus stared at me for a long second. A flicker of profound respect, mixed with fierce protectiveness, flashed across his features. He reached behind his back, pulled a sleek, subcompact Walther PPK from his inner holster, and pressed it into my hands.

"One in the chamber," he whispered, wrapping my fingers around the cold steel. "Safety is off. Don't hesitate."

I slipped the weapon into the deep inner pocket of my coat. "Never."

We placed Hope inside the hyper-secure medical suite on the 80th floor, guarded by four elite operators and watched over by Dr. Croft, the pediatric surgeon who had saved her life during the emergency delivery three months ago.

"She is completely safe here, Mrs. Vance," Dr. Croft said, his kind, gray eyes offering a reassuring smile as he adjusted Hope’s swaddle. "I have double-checked the oxygen lines and the emergency vitals. No one enters this room without my personal override."

"Thank you, Julian," Marcus nodded, clapping a hand on the doctor’s shoulder. "I trust you with her life."

"Always, Marcus," Dr. Croft replied solemnly.

Marcus took my hand, and together we stepped into the grand ballroom on the 84th floor.

The transition was blinding. Classical violins soared over the hum of polite conversation, the clinking of crystal flutes, and the laughter of billionaires who had never seen an ounce of real violence in their sheltered lives. Chandeliers of black Austrian crystal hung from forty-foot ceilings, illuminating five hundred guests dressed in black-tie tuxedos and flowing haute couture.

The moment Marcus and I walked through the double doors, the room fell silent.

The whispers began instantly.

*"Is that her? The wife who survived the attack?"*

*"Look at Marcus... he looks like he's ready to execute someone."*

*"I thought Isabella was in supermax solitary..."*

Marcus ignored them all, guiding me toward the central dais where the corporate board members stood sipping vintage champagne.

Suddenly, the lights dimmed. A spotlight swept across the stage as the master of ceremonies cleared his throat at the podium.

"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished board members, and honored guests," the announcer's voice boomed across the ballroom. "Tonight, we honor the legacy of the Vance family. Please raise your glasses to our Chief Executive, Marcus Vance, and his lovely wife, Khloe!"

A waiter in a crisp white tuxedo glided smoothly toward us, holding a silver tray bearing two crystal flutes filled with Dom Pérignon.

Marcus reached out, his gaze scanning the crowd, distracted by a fleeting glimpse of a woman with long raven hair slipping through the fire exit at the far end of the ballroom.

Without looking, Marcus took a flute from the tray and brought it to his lips, taking a long, deep swallow to steady his nerves.

I turned to watch the waiter walk away.

That was when I noticed it.

The waiter was wearing white silk gloves, but just above the cuff of his right sleeve, exposed for a fraction of a second under the chandelier light, was a tattoo—a coiled viper with the Latin words: *Sanguis Pro Sanguine*. Blood for Blood.

It was the same insignia stamped on the trust documents in Marcus’s father's vault.

"Marcus, don't!" I screamed, slapping the glass from his hand.

The crystal shattered across the marble stage, bubbling liquid splashing over my shoes.

Marcus turned to me, confused, his lips parted to speak—but the words never came.

His eyes widened in sudden, horrifying shock. His pupils dilated until they swallowed the blue of his irises. The glass flute slipped from his numb fingers. He clawed at his throat, his chest heaving as a terrifying, wet rattling sound tore from his lungs.

May you like

"Marcus!" I lunged forward, catching him as his knees gave out.

His six-foot-two frame collapsed like a felled oak, crashing heavily onto the marble dais. Foam, tinged with dark purple blood, began to seep from the corners of his mouth.
