Chapter 20 - The Red Light Reborn

The sound of that steady, rhythmic *beep... beep... beep...* was quieter than a heartbeat, but inside the pressurized cabin of that private jet, it screamed louder than an exploding engine.

"A subcutaneous micro-charge," Isabella purred, her finger resting lightly against the master trigger on her transmitter. "Synthesized liquid thermite, no larger than a grain of rice. Embedded directly beneath her clavicle during the umbilical chord clamping three months ago. Julian is a master surgeon, Khloe. You didn't even notice the microscopic suture beneath her birthmark."

"You monster," I breathed, my finger tightening on the trigger of my MP5 until the metal bit into my bone. "She was an infant! She was three days old!"

"She was an insurance policy," Isabella corrected, her eyes gleaming with triumphant, pure unadulterated madness. "And now, the policy matures."

Marcus took half a step forward, his rifle shaking with an intensity of rage that threatened to snap his bones. "If you touch that detonator, Isabella, I will skin you alive."

"If I touch this detonator, Marcus, your daughter’s heart disintegrates in three-thousandths of a second," she whispered, her voice dropping into a silky, terrifying calm. "Drop your weapons. Both of you. Kick them toward the galley."

Marcus and I locked eyes for a fraction of a microsecond.

In that single, unvoiced glance, six years of marriage, trauma, survival, and love passed between us. We didn't need words. We knew what was at stake.

Slowly, deliberately, Marcus lowered his assault rifle to the floor.

I unslung my MP5, letting it drop onto the carpet, kicking both weapons backward down the aisle.

"Good," Isabella smiled, gesturing with her free hand toward the open breach behind us. "Now, Julian... take the child and secure the cockpit. We execute the high-altitude cabin depressurization and let Mr. and Mrs. Vance take a thirty-thousand-foot swan dive into the Atlantic."

Julian nodded, his knuckles white around the acrylic pod, turning his back toward the cockpit door to enter the flight deck code.

*CRACK!*

The plane suddenly hit a massive pocket of wind shear, dropping three hundred feet in less than a second.

The violent downward G-force threw everyone off balance. Julian stumbled against the bulkhead, his grip on the pod slipping!

Marcus didn't hesitate.

He didn't draw a gun. He surged forward like a missile, his body slamming into Julian with the full, bone-crushing force of two hundred pounds of muscle and momentum.

*CRASH!*

Julian’s head slammed against the steel cockpit frame with a sickening crunch. The acrylic pod slipped from his fingers, tumbling through the air!

"HOPE!" I screamed, lunging forward across the sliding carpet, ignoring the agony tearing through my gunshot wound.

I hit the floor on my knees, extending both arms, catching the pod against my chest just inches before it shattered against the titanium floor rails.

Behind me, Isabella shrieked in fury.

She raised the nickel-plated Beretta, aiming straight at the back of my head—

*BANG!*

A shot rang out, deafening in the enclosed cabin.

Isabella gasped, her body violently jerking backward. The Beretta flew from her hand as a dark, expanding crimson bloom blossomed across the front of her emerald green gown.

She collapsed backward into the leather armchair, staring down at her chest in disbelief.

Standing in the forward doorway, Marcus lowered the backup Walther PPK he had concealed in his boot, smoke curling from the barrel.

"That was for Suite 402," Marcus whispered, his voice shaking with absolute, terminal finality.

Isabella coughed, dark arterial blood spilling over her lips. But as she slumped into the chair, her dying eyes didn't look at Marcus.

They looked down at her right hand.

The black transmitter was still gripped in her manicured fingers.

And with her absolute dying breath, her thumb pressed the red button all the way down.

*CLICK.*

A high-pitched, continuous, accelerating tone began to scream from the pod in my arms.

*BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!*

I ripped open the swaddle with frantic, trembling fingers.

Beneath Hope's collarbone, the microscopic red light was no longer blinking slowly. It had locked into a solid, blinding, hyper-accelerated crimson strobe.

On the digital glass face of the pod's internal telemetry display, a new graphic appeared—a bio-frequency frequency countdown, syncing directly to an incoming encrypted satellite transmission.

The master entertainment screens across the luxury cabin suddenly flickered to life.

Isabella’s bleeding face was dying in front of us, but on the screens above, a high-definition video broadcast overridden from a subterranean bunker appeared.

Sitting behind a monolithic mahogany desk in an undisclosed location was an older woman with silver hair, cold reptilian eyes, and the unmistakable, terrifying bone structure of the Vance bloodline.

*"Hello, Marcus. Hello, Khloe,"* the woman on the screen spoke, her voice an ancient, aristocratic chill that froze the blood in our veins. *"Did you really think Isabella was the head of the snake? Did you really think my daughter acted alone?"*

Marcus stopped breathing. His gun slipped from his hand, clattering against the floor.

"Mother...?" Marcus gasped, his voice breaking like a terrified child’s. "You... you died in Switzerland twenty years ago."

The woman on the screen smiled—a cruel, hollow smile as she rested her hand on a primary uplink console.

*"A true Vance never dies, Marcus. We merely shed our skins,"* Evelyn Vance whispered from the grave. *"You have twelve minutes to land that plane at my private runway in the Bahamas and hand over my granddaughter. If that aircraft deviates by a single degree... the charge on Hope's chest detonates."*

*BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...*

The red light on our daughter’s chest pulsed brighter, counting down the seconds in the dark.

And thirty thousand feet above the raging ocean, trapped inside a bleeding, crippled jet, the nightmare didn't end.

It had only just begun.
