Chapter 19 - 30,000 Feet of Pure Terror

The storm raged outside the cabin windows, blinding flashes of blue lightning illuminating the black abyss of the upper stratosphere.

Our tactical interceptor glided into the slipstream of the rogue Gulfstream G650 like a shadow, matching its speed and altitude to the millimeter. At 32,000 feet, the turbulent air bucked both aircraft violently, the airframes groaning under the immense aerodynamic stress.

"Equalizing cabin pressure!" Captain Briggs shouted, his voice muffled behind a high-altitude oxygen mask as he stood at the rear airlock of our jet. "We have the magnetic docking umbilical attached to their emergency service hatch! You have ninety seconds before their autopilot detects the drag differential and executes an evasive dive!"

Marcus strapped an oxygen mask over his face, his tactical goggles reflecting the crimson strobe of the airlock. He turned to me, his gloved hands grasping my shoulders.

"Khloe, you stay in the jump seat," he commanded, his voice tight through the comm-link. "This is a breach-and-clear. It’s going to be brutal."

I pushed his hands away, clicking the chin strap of my own helmet into place, raising my MP5. The wound in my shoulder burned like fire, but my hands were rock-steady.

"She’s my daughter, Marcus," I said, my voice cutting through his headset. "If anyone puts a bullet through Isabella Sterling tonight, it's going to be me."

Marcus looked into my eyes. He saw no hesitation. He saw no fear. He saw the same woman who had looked up at the red blinking light in Suite 402 while a stiletto crushed her stomach and chose to survive.

He gave a single, hard nod. "On my mark."

*THREE. TWO. ONE. BLOW THE HATCH!*

The shaped thermite charges around the service hatch detonated with a sharp, contained pop.

*WHOOOOOOSH!*

The deafening roar of thirty-thousand-foot winds shrieked through the pressurized breach as the titanium umbilical locked the two planes together. Marcus plunged through the pressurized tube first, his rifle firing the microsecond his boots hit the carpeted deck of the rogue jet.

*RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!*

Two private mercenaries in the rear cargo galley collapsed before they could even draw their sidearms, their bodies sliding across the polished teak flooring.

I breached right behind Marcus, clearing the narrow corridor toward the main luxury salon.

The interior of the G650 was a scene of decadent madness. Silk pillows, overturned crystal glasses, and loose hundred-dollar bills were scattered across the cabin floor, thrown around by the violent turbulence.

At the far end of the salon, standing before the reinforced cockpit bulkhead, was Dr. Julian Croft.

He wasn't wearing his white lab coat anymore. He wore a dark Kevlar tactical vest, holding a semi-automatic pistol in one hand, while his other arm held Hope’s clear acrylic transport pod clamped against his chest.

Behind him, sitting in a leather recliner, sipping champagne as if she were flying to Paris for fashion week, was Isabella.

"Drop the weapon, Julian!" Marcus bellowed, leveling his rifle directly between the doctor’s eyes. "Set the pod down, or I swear to God I will ventilate your skull!"

"You shoot me, Marcus, and this pod decompresses instantly!" Julian shouted back, his face twisted in desperate, cornered mania. "The pressure seal is linked to my dead-man's grip! If my pulse stops, the vacuum valve opens, and your precious little heiress suffocates before you can take another step!"

I lowered my weapon half an inch, my heart freezing in my chest.

Through the clear acrylic dome of the pod, I could see Hope. She was awake, her tiny blue eyes wide, staring through the plastic at the flickering cabin lights, oblivious to the war being fought over her breath.

"You're a doctor, Julian," I said, my voice trembling with raw, maternal agony. "You took an oath. You delivered her! You saved her life in the OR!"

Julian let out a bitter, psychotic laugh that was swallowed by the screaming wind outside. "I took an oath to protect my family, Khloe! Marcus’s father threw my mother out onto the streets to starve while he built this corporate empire! Everything the Vance family owns was built on our blood! Hope is the key! With her DNA, the Morales trust becomes the majority shareholder of Vance Global!"

"It's over, Julian," Marcus growled, taking a slow step forward. "Your accounts in Zurich are frozen. The FAA has locked the Caribbean airspace. There is nowhere for this plane to land."

"Then we don't land," Isabella’s voice chimed smoothly from the armchair.

She stood up, holding a small, sleek black transmitter in her hand—the same frequency design as the camera she had used to torture me in Suite 402.

She smiled at me—that same, venomous, beautiful, dead smile.

"Did you really think the Morales family left Hope's survival to chance, Khloe?" Isabella whispered, tilting her head. "Julian didn't just deliver your baby three months ago."

A cold, paralyzing dread flooded through my veins. "What did you do?"

Julian slowly turned the transport pod around.

May you like

Under the pale pink swaddle, right above Hope's tiny, fragile sternum, taped against her paper-thin skin, was a microscopic, surgically implanted subdermal chip.

And right in the center of that chip... was a tiny, pulsing, blinking red light.
