Chapter 13 - The Chairman's Secret Vault

"EVACUATE! EVERYBODY OUT NOW!"
Marcus’s command shattered the panic freezing the hallway. He grabbed my arm, propelling me and Hope down the service stairs at a dead sprint. Behind us, six private security guards in full tactical gear were already converging on the basement, their shouting voices drowned out by the shrill wail of the estate’s structural alarm.
"No, sir! The perimeter is compromised!" our head of security, Captain Briggs, yelled through his radio. "We have multiple vehicle signatures breaching the north tree line!"
"Ignore them! Clear the main house!" Marcus barked.
We burst through the kitchen doors and onto the back lawn just as a subterranean rumble shook the earth beneath our feet.
*BOOM!*
The ground bucked like an earthquake. The reinforced glass windows along the east wing shattered into a million glittering shards, raining down across the manicured lawn. A thick plume of black, acrid smoke belched from the garage vents, but the main structure held. Isabella hadn't used enough thermite to bring the house down; it had been a distraction charge—a tactical flashbang designed to send our security forces scattering like insects.
Within two minutes, an armored Cadillac Escalade slid to a halt on the lawn, the doors swinging open. Marcus shoved me and Hope into the armored backseat, slamming the door shut and sliding into the driver’s seat himself, not waiting for a chauffeur.
He floored the accelerator, the four-ton SUV tearing through the ruined north gate and launching onto the winding, fog-choked coastal highway.
In the backseat, Hope began to wail, startled by the sirens and the smell of sulfur. I rocked her against my chest, my hands trembling uncontrollably as I checked her head, her arms, her tiny fingers. She was whole. She was breathing. But the phantom image of that red stiletto inches from her face was seared into my retinas forever.
"Where are we going?" I demanded, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. "Marcus, talk to me! She was inside our home! How did she bypass the biometric locks? Only three people had the clearance codes: you, me, and—"
"My father," Marcus cut in, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles bulged against his skin. "The security protocols were built on the legacy Vance architecture. An architecture that only one other person had the master decryption keys for."
I stared at the back of his head through the rearview mirror. "Your father died four years ago."
"My father lived a double life for thirty years, Khloe," Marcus said, his voice bitter as poison. "When Isabella first entered my life as an acquisitions analyst, I thought she was just an ambitious Ivy League graduate with sharp instincts. But after what happened in Suite 402, I ordered a forensic audit of my father's offshore blind trusts. I didn't want to believe it back then. I thought the trail was just dirty corporate accounting."
"What did you find, Marcus?" I asked, a sick knot tightening in my stomach.
Marcus swerved around an oncoming delivery truck, the tires screeching on the wet asphalt. "Isabella isn't just my former mistress. Her real name isn't even Isabella Sterling. Her mother was Evelyn Vance's personal secretary in the nineties. Before Evelyn died under mysterious circumstances in that Swiss chalet fire, my father transferred twenty-five percent of the company's covert voting shares into a Swiss numbered account under the name *Victoria Vance*."
The breath caught in my throat. "Victoria... Isabella is your half-sister?!"
"No," Marcus hissed, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. "She’s not my sister. My father wasn't her biological father. He was her *mark*. Her mother worked for the Morales syndicate—the offshore cartel my father used to launder acquisition funds during the tech boom. They bred her for this, Khloe. From the day she was born, she was trained to infiltrate our family, manipulate me, secure an heir to the Vance bloodline, and seize total control of the hundred-billion-dollar trust."
I looked down at the ultrasound photograph I was still clutching in my bloody hand.
*MINE.*
She didn't want Marcus. She never loved him. She had wanted to destroy me because my child—a legitimate, bloodline heir born from a legal marriage—completely invalidated her legal claim to the ancestral trust. If Hope lived, Isabella’s entire thirty-year corporate coup was dead in the water.

"Where are we going?" I repeated, my voice steadying, replaced by a cold, lethal resolve.
Marcus glanced up at the mirror, his eyes burning with an ancient fury. "The only place where the original paper shares and the blackmail archives are kept. The Chairman’s Vault under the Manhattan headquarters. Tonight is the annual Winter Solstice Gala. Three thousand shareholders, politicians, and media moguls are in that building right now. And if Isabella is playing her endgame... that's where she's going to strike."
