Chapter 15 - Forty-Eight Minutes To Flatline

The ballroom erupted into sheer, unadulterated pandemonium.

Women in diamond necklaces shrieked, tripping over their silk gowns as they trampled each other toward the exits. Men shouted for security, overturning cocktail tables, champagne flutes shattering against the floor like gunfire.

"GET BACK! EVERYBODY GET THE HELL BACK!" I screamed, dropping to my knees on the cold marble beside Marcus, grabbing his head and pulling it onto my lap.

His skin had turned a horrific, translucent ash gray within seconds. His veins stood out like black ink lines beneath the surface of his neck. His body was convulsing in violent, uncontrollable spasms, his teeth grinding together so hard I could hear the enamel cracking.

"Marcus! Look at me! Stay with me!" I begged, tearing off his bowtie and unbuttoning his tuxedo collar.

His eyes were rolling back into his head, his hands clawing weakly at my wrists. He was suffocating in plain air.

"CLEAR THE STAGE!" Captain Briggs’s voice cut through the chaos as three tactical guards pushed through the screaming crowd with assault rifles drawn, forming a human perimeter around us. "Where is the medical unit?! Code Red! We have a VIP poisoning on the 84th floor!"

The elevator doors on the private service wing chimed, and Dr. Julian Croft sprinted out carrying a heavy trauma kit, two nurses trailing behind him.

"Move! Let me through!" Julian shouted, sliding on his knees across the marble directly beside me. He ripped open Marcus’s shirt, slamming a portable biometric monitor onto his chest.

The monitor’s screen flashed instantly into violent red:

*HEART RATE: 188 BPM — RISING*

*BLOOD OXYGEN: 62% — CRITICAL*

*TOXIN SIGNATURE: UNKNOWN SYNTHETIC NEUROTOXIN*

"It's Tetrodotoxin-B," Julian gasped, his hands moving with frantic precision as he drew a syringe of atropine. "It's an engineered military-grade paralytic! It shuts down the central nervous system from the diaphragm outward. In less than forty minutes, his lungs will completely freeze, and his heart will rupture from systolic pressure!"

"Fix him!" I gripped Julian’s collar, pulling the doctor down until our eyes were inches apart. My voice wasn't begging anymore. It was cold, lethal, and vibrating with an authority that stunned even the veteran surgeon. "You save my husband, Julian, or so help me God, I will burn this entire city to the ground!"

"I need the specific synthetic antidote, Khloe!" Julian cried out, his voice cracking with panic as he injected the atropine directly into Marcus’s subclavian vein. "This isn't an off-the-shelf poison! It was synthesized with a custom protein chain! If I give him the standard antivenom, it will trigger an immediate anaphylactic cardiac arrest! We need the neutralizing compound from whoever made the poison!"

Marcus seized again, a harsh, gurgling gasp tearing from his throat. His hand found mine, his fingers squeezing with the absolute last ounce of strength in his failing body.

His lips moved, barely forming the shapes of the words: *H-Hope... protect... Hope...*

"I will," I whispered, pressing my forehead against his clammy, sweating brow. "I swear to you on our daughter's life, Marcus. You fight. You hold on. I will get the antidote."

Just then, Marcus’s phone, lying in the puddle of spilled champagne on the stage floor, began to vibrate.

An unknown number.

I scooped it up, hitting the speaker button with a trembling, blood-stained thumb.

"Did you enjoy the vintage, Khloe?"

Isabella’s voice purred through the speaker, crisp, clean, and completely devoid of human empathy.

"I have forty-eight minutes before Marcus’s heart turns into jelly," she continued, her tone conversational, as if she were discussing the weather. "The neutralizing vial is right here in my hand. Cool, clear, and perfectly effective. One injection, and your darling husband wakes up with nothing more than a bad headache."

"What do you want, Isabella?" I snarled, standing up, stepping away from the monitors, my hand slipping inside my coat pocket, gripping the cold grip of the Walther PPK.

"Don't play dumb, sweetheart. You know what I want. I want what was stolen from my mother. I want what was promised to me before you opened your legs and trapped Marcus with a bastard."

"She is his daughter!" I hissed.

"She is an obstacle," Isabella snapped, her voice suddenly dropping into a vicious, guttural hiss. "Pier 54. The old dry docks on the Hudson. Bring the baby. Alone. No security, no police, no tracking transponders. If I see a single flashing light, if I hear a single helicopter rotor within five nautical miles of that pier, I crush the antidote under my heel, and Marcus dies choking on his own tongue."

*CLICK.*

The line went dead.

I looked at the digital display on the trauma monitor.

*COUNTDOWN TO IRREVERSIBLE BRAIN HYPOXIA: 42:15.*

Dr. Croft looked up at me, sweat pouring down his pale face, his hands pumping Marcus's chest. "Khloe... you can't go down there. It’s an execution trap! She’s going to kill you both!"

I looked down at Marcus. His eyes were half-open, staring unblinkingly at the ceiling, fighting with every atom of his being just to draw another half-breath of air.

"Briggs," I said, turning to the security commander.

"Ma'am?"

"Prep the unmarked subterranean transport," I ordered, my voice dead and steady. "And bring me the biometric decoy from the ballistic lab."

May you like

Briggs’s eyes widened. "Mrs. Vance, that decoy unit is experimental—"

"I don't give a damn," I whispered, cocking the slide of the Walther PPK with a sharp, mechanical click. "She wants a baby. Let’s make sure she gets one."
