Chapter 6 - Bloodline & Blackmail

The operating room was a war zone of stainless steel, harsh halogen lights, and the metallic smell of blood.

Outside the viewing window, Marcus pressed his palms against the glass, helpless. Dr. Charles and a team of six surgical specialists worked frantically over my opened body. The rhythmic, agonizing drone of the flatline monitor was ringing through the intercom before an electric shock paddles thudded against my chest.

*“CLEAR!”*

My body arched off the table.

*“Come on, Khloe! Breathe, damn it!”* Dr. Charles barked. *“Push two milligrams of epi! Get that suction tube cleared! We’re losing the baby’s pulse completely—get the scalpel!”*

Marcus felt his knees buckle. For all his billions, for all his corporate power, he could not buy a single breath of air for the woman he loved or the daughter he had prayed for. He dropped to his knees in the hallway outside the OR, burying his head in his bloody hands, sobbing uncontrollably.

Downstairs, Isabella was not going quietly.

Even in zip-cuffs, pinned against the back of a black SUV in the private underground ambulance bay, her venomous mind was calculating counters. The local police had just pulled up, their sirens painting the concrete walls in flashes of red and blue.

A detective stepped out of the cruiser, but before he could read her her rights, Isabella demanded her one phone call.

“You want to arrest me?” she hissed at the detective, her eyes burning with defiance. “Dial 212-555-0199. That is Judge Harrison’s private residence. If you put me in that squad car, half the judges in this district will lose their campaign funding before morning.”

She knew she had leverage. For the last four years, Isabella had run the black-budget accounts of Vance Capital, laundering money and keeping detailed blackmail dossiers on every influential figure in the state—including judges, senators, and the very Chief of Police whose officers were currently surrounding her.

The detective hesitated, looking at her blood-soaked silk shirt and her icy, aristocratic glare.

“You think Marcus is an angel?” Isabella whispered, leaning toward the officer. “Check the corporate ledger for Project Genesis. Marcus signed off on the exact same chemical testing that put his wife in that bed. If I go down, Vance Capital burns. The city’s largest employer collapses. Ten thousand jobs disappear. Do you really want that blood on your hands, Detective?”

The detective took a step back, pulling out his radio, his face grim. The corporate rot ran far deeper than a domestic dispute; Isabella was threatening to detonate the entire socioeconomic fabric of the city to save her own skin.

Upstairs, a tiny, fragile sound shattered the silence of OR 3.

It was weak. It was wet. It sounded like the cry of a newborn kitten fighting for air in a hurricane.

*Waaah… waaah…*

Marcus’s head snapped up.

Inside the surgical suite, Dr. Charles was holding a tiny, purple-skinned infant, clearing her airways with a rubber bulb. The flatline on my heart monitor had broken—it had returned to a slow, fragile, but steady rhythm.

*Beep… beep… beep…*

The nurse looked up at the viewing window, tears in her eyes, and nodded to Marcus.

“She’s alive,” Marcus breathed, his voice cracking as he pressed his forehead against the cold glass. “They’re alive.”
