Chapter 9 - The Broadcast of Shadows

Down on the auditorium stage, Commissioner Hayes stopped mid-sentence as a deafening electronic squeal tore through the public address speakers, forcing several journalists to cover their ears in agony.

The massive high-definition presentation monitors behind the podium—which had been displaying a fabricated missing-child poster of Leo Cross—suddenly went black.

Richard Vance’s heart dropped into his stomach. The smug, sympathetic expression on his face shattered instantly.

"Cut the feed!" Crane roared from the back of the auditorium, drawing his concealed sidearm and sprinting toward the control booth stairs. "Cut the power to the entire building! Do it now!"

It was too late.

The master screens flickered back to life, split into four distinct, crystal-clear digital panes. The live broadcast feed was hijacked across thirty-eight local and national stations, broadcasting directly into twenty million American households.

In the first pane, a video began to play.

The timestamp in the corner read: *November 14, 11:42 PM—Six Months Ago.*

The camera angle was from an exterior security feed atop the Black River Canyon bridge. The footage was grainy, but the faces were unmistakable.

Daniel Cross was on his knees, his hands zip-tied behind his back, his face swollen and bleeding onto the asphalt. Standing over him, holding a heavy iron tire iron, was Richard Vance. Behind Vance stood Victor Crane and three men in corporate security uniforms.

The audio, cleaned and amplified by Daniel’s military software, boomed through the auditorium speakers like thunder:

*"Please, Richard,"* Daniel’s recorded voice sobbed through the hall. *"Clara is pregnant. Leo is only four. I won't say a word. I’ll delete the files. Just let me go home to my boy."*

The footage showed Richard Vance sneering, stepping forward, and driving the steel bar into Daniel’s ribs.

*"You should have thought about your boy before you audited Account Tartarus, Daniel,"* Vance’s voice echoed across the auditorium, crystal clear, arrogant, and devoid of humanity. *"Nobody audits me. Put him in the driver's seat. Push the car over."*

The video showed Crane and two mercenaries dragging Daniel’s limp body into his sedan, shifting the transmission into neutral, and rolling the vehicle through the severed guardrail into the abyss below.

The auditorium erupted into pure, unadulterated madness.

Journalists dropped their microphones in horror. Camera operators zoomed their lenses directly onto Richard Vance’s face.

The billionaire stood on the stage, completely paralyzed, his mouth hanging open in silent, screaming terror. The pale makeup could not hide the fact that every drop of blood had drained from his skull.

In the second and third panes on the screens, documents began scrolling at high speed: bank routing numbers, offshore dummy corporations, signed bills of lading for military-grade explosives, and high-resolution surveillance photographs of Deputy Commissioner Hayes accepting duffel bags of cash in the basement of Vance Tower.

Hayes backed away from the podium as if it were radioactive, his hands trembling violently.

"Turn it off!" Vance shrieked, losing every shred of his fabricated sanity. He lunged across the stage, grabbing a heavy brass microphone stand and swinging it wildly at the primary projection monitor, smashing the glass into shards. "TURN IT OFF! IT’S A FAKE! IT’S A DEEPFAKE!"

Then, the fourth screen activated.

It was a live feed from the control booth directly above them.

Maya Cross stood looking down through the reinforced glass window, a handheld microphone in her hand. Her voice cut through the chaos like a silver scalpel.

"My brother died to bring this truth to light," Maya said, her voice echoing through every speaker in the Municipal Center and across the nation. "He left the proof with the only person Richard Vance couldn't intimidate. A five-year-old child."

The auditorium double doors at the back of the room swung open with a resounding bang.

Federal agents—real agents from the Department of Justice’s elite Tactical Operations Division, accompanied by thirty heavily armed state marshals—stormed through the entrance, their assault rifles raised.

"Richard Vance!" the lead federal commander bellowed through a bullhorn. "Step away from the podium and place your hands on your head! You are under arrest for treason, racketeering, and capital murder!"
