Chapter 25 - The Awakening of the Dead

In the absolute darkness, the world exploded into violence.
Clara fired first. The muzzle flash of her tactical 9mm strobed through the room like lightning, illuminating the surprised face of the first guard before he collapsed backward against the server rack.
"Kill them!" Julian’s voice shrieked through the dark, devoid of all composure. "Kill the woman! Secure the boy!"
Automatic gunfire erupted, deafening in the enclosed concrete bunker. Bullets chewed through the glass walls of the isolation ward, sending thousands of razor-sharp shards raining down across the floor. Maya rolled beneath the hail of fire, kicking a rolling tray of surgical instruments directly into the shins of an advancing operative.
The man grunted, losing his balance, and Maya sprang up like a coiled viper. She drove a scalpel cleanly into the gap between his tactical vest and his neck. The operative choked, collapsing into her arms, and Maya stripped the combat shotgun from his sling before he even hit the floor.
She racked the slide with a thunderous *clack*.
*BOOM.*
The blast tore through the darkness, lifting a second operative off his feet and throwing him into the glowing debris of the shattered mainframe.
Beneath the hospital bed, Leo remained curled tightly, his hands over his ears, whispering his mother’s name over and over like a prayer.
Suddenly, an alarm tone that none of them had heard before began to chime—not from the ceiling speakers, but from the life-support unit itself.
*NEURAL FLUSH COMPLETE.*
*ADRENALINE COUNTER-MEASURE DEPLOYED.*
*SUBJECT: CROSS, DANIEL — CONSCIOUSNESS RESTORED.*
Through the chaos and the strobe of muzzle flashes, a hand—pale, scarred, and trembling with terrifying strength—reached up from the hospital bed.
The hand gripped the edge of the steel frame, the knuckles turning white. With a violent, guttural gasp, Daniel Cross sat bolt upright. He ripped the endotracheal tube from his throat, coughing violently as blood and saliva sprayed onto the shattered glass.
A guard turned, raising his rifle toward the bed. "Target is mobile—"
Daniel moved with the unnatural, explosive speed of a man who had spent six months trapped in a psychological cage. Before the guard could pull the trigger, Daniel lunged forward, grabbing the barrel of the assault rifle with both hands and wrenching it downward with brutal leverage.
The bone in the guard’s wrist snapped with a sickening crack. Daniel drove his forehead directly into the bridge of the man's nose, seized the dropped sidearm from his holster, and fired three double-taps into the remaining two operatives in the ward.
Silence fell across the room, broken only by the crackle of burning wires and Daniel's ragged, heavy breathing.
Maya stood frozen, the smoking shotgun still raised, staring at her brother through the drifting smoke.
Daniel looked up. His eyes, sunken and bloodshot, locked onto hers.

"Maya," he rasped, his voice raw and destroyed. "Get the boy. They didn't just come for the money. They activated the cleansing protocol."
