Chapter 26 - The Poisoned Bloodline

"Daniel..." Maya whispered, the shotgun trembling in her hands for the first time. The tears she had held back through days of terror finally broke, tracing clean lines through the soot and blood on her face.
Before she could take a step toward him, Daniel swung his legs over the side of the hospital bed, his bare feet landing on the glass-strewn floor without flinching. He dropped to his knees, ignoring the cuts, and reached under the bed frame.
"Leo," Daniel called, his voice softer now, cracking with emotion. "Hey, buddy. Look at me. The monster is gone."
Leo peered out from beneath the gurney, his wide eyes shining in the dying emergency lights. When he saw Daniel’s face, his little lips trembled, and he hurled himself forward, burying his face into Daniel’s chest. "Uncle Daniel! You woke up! Barnaby’s eye sparked and the lights went away!"
Daniel wrapped his emaciated arms around the boy, burying his face in Leo’s dark hair, his entire frame shaking with suppressed sobs. "You did it, little man. You held the line. You did so good."
Clara stepped up to the doorway of the shattered ward, reloading her magazine with practiced efficiency. "Hate to interrupt the family reunion, but Julian Gray isn't among the bodies. The bastard slipped through the emergency exit while we were taking down the strike team."
Daniel’s head snapped up, the warmth in his expression instantly replaced by a look of sheer tactical dread. "He’s heading for the central sub-station. Clara, listen to me. Julian isn't trying to escape."
"What are you talking about?" Clara demanded. "He lost the cipher. The terminal is destroyed."
"The terminal was a distraction!" Daniel said, standing up, using the IV pole for support until his shaking legs locked into place. "Julian never wanted the banking ledger, Maya. Vance wanted the money. Julian Gray works for something far worse. The Archangel protocol isn't a wealth repository—it’s an automated purge algorithm. It ties into every national security database on Earth."
Maya stepped forward, grabbing Daniel’s arm, feeling how frail his body had become beneath his hospital gown. "Daniel, explain it to me. Why did he need Leo?"
Daniel looked directly into Maya's eyes, and the horror reflected in his gaze chilled her to her core.
"Because our father didn't die of a heart attack twenty years ago, Maya. He was the founder of the Syndicate. And Leo isn't just your son by chance. Leo's father... the man you thought was an ordinary architect who abandoned you before Leo was born... was Julian Gray’s eldest son."
Maya felt the subterranean bunker tilt beneath her feet. The air vanished from her lungs. "No... that’s impossible. Richard was an artist. He—"
"Richard was the Syndicate’s chief geneticist," Daniel said relentlessly, his voice heavy with agony. "He defected to protect you. They murdered him, Maya. And they left you alive because they needed the child to be born outside their sphere of surveillance. Leo carries the bloodline key that authorizes the total wipedown of the global intelligence grid. If Julian reaches the primary relay at the base of the foundation, he won't just steal the ledger—he will trigger a global blackout that will plunge seventy million people into chaos, erasing every crime the Syndicate ever committed."
A low, subterranean hum began to vibrate through the concrete beneath their boots.
The walls began to shudder.

"He just initialized the primary core," Daniel said, his eyes darkening. "We have four minutes before the whole foundation collapses into the subway tunnels below."
