Chapter 23 - The Man in the Ivory Mask

Maya didn't flinch. Even with three crimson laser dots dancing across her sternum, she stood perfectly motionless, using her own body to shield Leo completely from their line of sight.

"He's five years old, Julian," Maya said, each word dripping with venomous contempt. "You ran the greatest financial syndicate in the Western hemisphere, and you're hiding behind an infant."

Julian let out a dry, musical laugh that echoed unnervingly through the subterranean chamber. "An infant? Is that what Daniel told you he was?"

Julian walked slowly along the perimeter of the glass enclosure, tapping his silver-tipped cane against the reinforced paneling. *Tap. Tap. Tap.*

"Daniel didn't just design the Archangel cipher to hide his offshore accounts, Maya. He knew the syndicate was coming for him. He knew Sterling Vance, the board of directors, the defense contractors—all of them—wanted total ownership of the global biometric identity ledger. A digital registry that controls every banking transaction, every sovereign border clearance, every military satellite command from London to Tokyo."

Julian stopped, pointing the cane directly at Leo.

"Daniel didn't save that ledger on a hard drive. Silicon can be seized. Clouds can be hacked. He encoded the master algorithmic key into synthetic neural pathways, bonded them to an engineered stem-cell sequence, and synthesized it into the marrow of his own nephew before the child took his first breath."

Clara’s breath hitched. "You’re lying. Daniel would never experiment on his own flesh and blood."

"Experiment? No. He *protected* it," Julian said, his eyes glittering with fanatic zeal. "Leo isn't just Maya's son. Leo is the vault. The boy's unique DNA, his pulse rate, his neural firing patterns—they are the only decryption keys in existence. Barnaby the bear is merely the transmitter. The boy is the living terminal."

Julian stepped closer, his guards tightening their formation.

"Now," Julian whispered, extending a gloved hand. "Bring him to the terminal beside Daniel's bed. Let him touch the primary console to authenticate the sequence. If you do, I will allow Daniel to wake up. You can walk out of this bunker together, free to live in obscurity."

"And if I refuse?" Maya asked, feeling Leo’s small hands clutch the fabric of her coat.

Julian’s face went dead, the polite veneer peeling away to reveal a bottomless abyss of cruelty. "Then I will slit Daniel’s throat in front of you, put a bullet through Clara's head, and extract the marrow from that child’s bones myself. You have ten seconds."
