Chapter 29 - The Midnight Siege

The platform was Old City Hall station—an architectural relic of vaulted tile ceilings, brass chandeliers covered in decades of cobwebs, and sweeping curved tracks abandoned since the mid-twentieth century.
Silence hung heavy in the damp air.
"Out of the car," Daniel commanded in a low whisper. "Now. Move to the shadows."
Maya lifted Leo into her arms, keeping her back pressed against the arched brick pillars as they exited the stalled railcar. Clara took the left flank, her gun raised, her eyes scanning the shadows above the decorative mezzanine.
Then, from the darkness of the twin tunnel entrances, the sound began.
*Thump. Thump. Thump.*
It was the synchronized, rhythmic march of heavily armored boots on gravel.
From both ends of the platform, tactical strike teams emerged from the gloom. They wore full combat armor, ballistic masks, and night-vision optics. But these weren't corporate security contractors. Their helmets bore the insignia of an elite, privatized black-ops division.
And walking down the center of the tracks behind them, completely unhurried, was Julian Gray.
He had changed out of his dust-covered clothes into a fresh charcoal-gray overcoat, his silver cane clicking against the wooden railway ties with deliberate, terrifying cadence.
"You really thought a Victorian rail spur would save you, Daniel?" Julian’s voice echoed off the vaulted ceilings, magnified by the station's natural acoustics. "I laid the fiber-optic lines through these tunnels forty years ago. Every inch of subterranean New York belongs to me."
Julian stopped fifty feet away, surrounded by twelve armed operatives with submachine guns trained on the four survivors.
"Hand over the drive, Daniel. Hand over the boy. And I will allow your sister a quick, painless death. Choose to fight, and I will have my surgeons dissect the child’s brain while you watch from your knees."
Maya felt an animal rage ignite inside her chest. She stepped forward from behind the pillar, the shotgun leveled straight at Julian's chest. "You take one more step toward my son, Julian, and I will blow you in half."
Julian smiled coldly, raising his hand. "Kill the women. Pin the brother. Preserve the boy."
Before the operatives could pull their triggers, the darkness above them fractured.
A deafening flashbang grenade detonated from the overhead mezzanine, bathing the ancient station in blinding white phosphorus light and concussive sound. Two operatives collapsed immediately, clutching their ears as blood ran down their necks.
From the high balconies of the abandoned station, rappelling ropes dropped down through the gloom. Four black-clad figures slid down the lines with lethal speed, opening fire on Julian’s strike team with suppressed carbines.
"Who the hell are they?!" Clara yelled, pulling Maya and Leo behind a stone archway as bullets ricocheted off the decorative tiles.

Daniel smiled a cold, bloodied smile through the chaos. "I didn't just build an encryption key, Clara. I hired an insurance policy."
