Chapter 17 - The Bloodline Cipher

"Drop the weapon, Captain," the silver-haired man said, his tone as casual as a host offering dessert. "Or my men on the mezzanine will put two rounds through Clara’s spine before your Kimber clears its trigger reset."
Maya didn't drop the gun. Her finger remained locked on the trigger, the tension in the spring vibrating against the pad of her index finger. Her tactical eye tracked the red dots dancing on her vest, calculating the half-second delay between the snipers' neural reaction and her own trigger squeeze. She could kill the man in the chair. But Clara and Leo would die in the crossfire.
"Maya... please," Clara whispered, her voice trembling, stepping instinctively in front of Leo.
Slowly, deliberately, Maya engaged the safety on the 1911 and placed it on the polished hardwood floor, kicking it away with her boot.
"Sensible," the man said, rising from the armchair. He smoothed his suit jacket, stepping out of the vault into the dim light of the study. "Allow me to introduce myself. I am Director Richard Sterling. Formerly Deputy Director of Operations for the National Reconnaissance Office. Currently... Chairman of the Prometheus Executive Committee."
"The architect," Sophia spat, her eyes burning with hatred. "You murdered my father."
Sterling chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Your father murdered himself the moment he allowed Daniel Cross to walk out of this building with the Archangel master file. Arthur was a weak, vain creature who thought money bought sovereignty. He was useful until he became noisy."
Sterling turned his gaze toward Leo. The five-year-old was clutching Barnaby, his small body trembling as he buried his face in Clara’s hip.
"And now, we come to the final loose end," Sterling murmured, stepping toward the child.
Maya immediately stepped between Sterling and the boy, her shoulders broad, her posture radiating pure, unadulterated violence. "Take one more step toward that child, Sterling, and I will rip your throat out with my bare hands before your snipers can pull their triggers."
Sterling stopped, tilting his head with genuine admiration. "Captain Cross. Your service record with the 75th Ranger Regiment was exemplary. It’s a tragedy your brother didn't possess your survival instincts. Daniel was brilliant, but he was fatally sentimental."
"Daniel beat you," Maya said, her voice dripping with ice. "He extracted the root code. He scattered your network. You don't have the cipher."
"Don't I?" Sterling smiled, gesturing toward the interior of the open vault.
On the center shelf inside the vault, the safety-deposit box that Sophia had sought sat wide open. It was completely empty.
Sophia gasped, stumbling backward. "The will... the paper..."
"Burned two hours ago," Sterling said smoothly. "You see, Sophia, your father didn't write the cipher in his will. He didn't trust paper. Daniel Cross knew that. Daniel knew Arthur Vance was a coward who would never commit a death-sentence code to physical ink."
Sterling reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a sleek, digital diagnostic scanner, its screen glowing pale blue.
"The cipher isn't a string of letters and numbers," Sterling revealed, looking directly at Leo. "It’s a genetic sequence. When Daniel realized Prometheus was closing in on him six months ago, he took his son to a private medical clinic in Baltimore for a routine vaccination. Only it wasn't a vaccine. Daniel used an experimental CRISPR protocol to bind the eighteen-character master decryption cipher into Leo’s non-coding DNA."
Clara’s breath hitched in her throat, her face draining of all color. "No... Daniel wouldn't do that to our son!"
"He did it because he knew none of us would dare kill the child until the cipher was extracted," Sterling said, stepping forward again, his eyes gleaming with obsessive triumph. "Leo isn't just Daniel's son, Mrs. Cross. He is the living, breathing master key to the Archangel Protocol. All I need is three drops of his blood."

From the shadows of the upper mezzanine, two private security contractors clad in black tactical gear descended the spiral staircase, their submachine guns leveled at Maya’s chest.
"Secure the Captain," Sterling ordered coldly. "And bring me the boy."
