Chapter 30 - The Final Broadcast Protocol

The firefight was over in forty seconds.

The counter-ambush was executed with surgical, terrifying precision. Daniel's extraction contractors—former Tier-One operators funded through dead-drop accounts Daniel had established years prior—neutralized Julian's forward team before the operatives could even establish a firing line.

Julian stumbled backward onto the tracks, his arrogance dissolving into sheer panic as his security detail was eliminated around him. He raised his cane, aiming the concealed firearm within its tip at Leo.

*BANG.*

Maya didn't hesitate. She fired the shotgun.

The heavy slug caught Julian directly in the right shoulder, spinning him around and throwing him onto the gravel tracks. The cane clattered into the dark water of the drainage trench. Julian groaned in agony, clutching his shattered shoulder as blood pooled beneath his charcoal coat.

Daniel stepped out from the cover of the pillar. He walked slowly toward the fallen architect of his misery, his boots crunching against the ballast stone. He looked down at Julian with eyes that were entirely dead.

"The Syndicate dies tonight, Julian," Daniel said softly.

"You... you fool..." Julian choked out, spitting blood onto the rails. "You think... you think killing me stops it? The broadcast relay... is already live. The uplink to Fort Meade... doesn't need Leo anymore... It only needed... his heartbeat to initiate the ping. The ping happened the moment he touched the console!"

Daniel froze.

High above them, inside the control room of the abandoned station, one of Daniel’s contractors shouted down: *"Cross! We’ve tapped into the global satellite uplink! The transmission has begun! The Black Ledger is broadcasting across every primary network on the continent!"*

Maya let out a ragged breath, tears of relief burning her eyes. "It’s over. It’s finally over."

The contractor’s voice crackled through the radio again, but this time, the tone was laced with sudden, paralyzing confusion.

*"Cross... wait. Stop the transmission. Stop it right now!"*

"What are you talking about?" Daniel barked into the radio mic. "Let it broadcast!"

*"It’s not transmitting the Syndicate’s crimes!"* the voice screamed through the static. *"The file was swapped! It’s broadcasting an executive authorization warrant... declaring you, Maya, and Clara as international terrorists! It just authorized a lethal, shoot-on-sight strike order to every federal agency in the country!"*

Maya’s blood ran cold. She spun around to look at the shadows of the mezzanine.

From the dark archway of the station's main exit, the heavy, rhythmic click of leather dress shoes echoed down the marble stairs.

A man stepped out of the shadows, flanked by four federal marshals with raised sidearms. He wore an expensive bespoke navy suit, a gold watch glinting on his wrist. He was clean-shaven, tall, his handsome features bearing a chilling, undeniable resemblance to the little boy clinging to Maya’s legs.

Maya’s shotgun slipped from her numb fingers, clattering onto the stone floor.

"Richard...?" Maya whispered, her entire reality shattering into a million pieces.

The man who had supposedly died five years ago—the father of her child—smiled at her, his eyes cold, calculating, and completely alive. He drew a silver automatic pistol and pointed it directly at Daniel's chest.

"Thank you for bringing my son home, Maya," Richard said calmly. "Now hand him over... before I have them paint this station with your brother's blood."
