Chapter 22 - The Ghost in the Sub-Level

The descent was an descent into hell.

The primary elevator banks had been severed when the power grid flashed, leaving Maya, Clara, and Leo to navigate the reinforced service shafts. Emergency red strobes bathed the concrete walls in a bloody, rhythmic glare. Every ten floors, the air grew noticeably heavier, thick with the smell of ozone, diesel exhaust, and burning electrical insulation.

Clara moved in front, her tactical flashlight slicing through the drifting dust. Her knuckles were white against the grip of her pistol. "If Julian Gray is running Sub-Level 7, Maya, we aren't dealing with Vance’s street muscle anymore. Julian was the chief architect of the Archangel program. He’s the one who weaponized Daniel’s biometric data."

"I don't care if he's the devil himself," Maya said, her voice flat, carrying Leo against her hip. The little boy’s head rested on her shoulder, his arms locked tight around Barnaby. "He kept my brother in a coma for six months to mine his mind. He used my son as the cryptographic key. He dies tonight."

They reached the reinforced blast door labeled *MAINTENANCE ARCHIVE - LEVEL B7*. The heavy steel was scorched, bearing the scorch marks of thermite charges. Someone had tried to weld it shut from the inside, but the deadbolts were bent outward—as if an immense pressure had buckled them.

"Stand back," Clara whispered, sweeping the doorway.

The door yielded with a groan of tortured iron. Beyond it lay a world detached from the gleaming luxury of the penthouse above. It was a sterile, subterranean labyrinth of glass partitions, server racks humming like swarming hornets, and floor-to-ceiling medical monitors displaying cascading green algorithms.

In the center of the vast atrium sat the isolation ward they had seen on the projection.

Glass tubes ran from the ceiling into bank after bank of fluid reservoirs. And in the center of the glass-walled chamber, surrounded by armed guards dressed in unmarked black tactical gear, lay Daniel Cross. His face was gaunt, his cheekbones jutting sharply against skin that hadn't seen daylight in half a year. But the pulse monitor beside him beat with a steady, rhythmic beep.

Standing at the foot of the bed, wiping his hands with a linen handkerchief, was Julian Gray. His tailored ivory suit was pristine, contrasting sharply with the cold, brutal machinery around him.

"You're late, Maya," Julian said without looking up, his voice echoing off the reinforced glass. "Though I suppose climbing down eighty floors of emergency stairs burns quite a bit of adrenaline."

At his word, six tactical operatives raised their assault rifles, the red laser sights locking directly onto Maya’s chest.

"Let the boy step forward," Julian commanded, finally turning to face them. His eyes were cold, gray, completely devoid of empathy. "Or your brother's heart stops before you can cross the threshold."
