Chapter 24 - The Heartbeat Protocol

"Mommy..." Leo whimpered, his face buried in Maya’s neck. "The bad man smells like medicine. I'm scared."
Maya pressed a kiss to the boy's forehead, whispering against his ear, so quietly that even Clara could barely hear: *"Remember what Uncle Daniel said about the light switch, Leo? When the dark comes, you close your eyes and drop."*
Leo blinked, his little jaw tightening in sudden comprehension. He nodded once.
"Alright, Julian," Maya announced, raising her hands in surrender. "Lower the weapons. Let me walk him to the console."
Julian smiled, a smug victory curling his thin lips. He gestured with two fingers, and the guards lowered their rifles to low-ready positions, though their fingers remained curled tight around the triggers.
Maya walked forward slowly, her boots clicking against the polished concrete. Step by step, she brought Leo toward the sealed glass ward. Clara trailed three paces behind, her eyes cataloging every security camera, every hydraulic line, every structural flaw in the room.
They passed through the automated decontamination archway into the primary medical bay. The sterile smell of antiseptic and refrigerated blood hit them like a physical wall. Daniel lay mere feet away, his breathing shallow, tubes protruding from his neck and forearms.
"Place his palm on the reader," Julian instructed, stepping up beside the primary terminal. A glowing glass plate was embedded into the brushed steel pedestal next to Daniel's bed. "Once the Archangel protocol verifies his bio-signature, the global asset lock will release."
Maya set Leo down on the cold floor. "Go ahead, sweetie. Touch the glass."
Leo stepped forward, holding Barnaby tightly under his left arm. He reached his right hand toward the glass scanner.
Julian leaned in, his eyes wide with ravenous greed. "Yes... that’s it. Decrypt the ledger."
Leo's fingers hovered an inch above the scanner. Then, without warning, the little boy looked up at Julian, his eyes clear and resolute.
"Uncle Daniel said bad people don't get presents," Leo said clearly.
Instead of pressing his palm flat against the scanner, Leo jammed the heavy steel base of the plush bear’s mechanical eye directly into the high-voltage diagnostic port beneath the console.
"Now, Leo! Drop!" Maya screamed.
Leo hit the floor instantly, curling into a tight ball beneath Daniel’s hospital gurney.
The diagnostic port exploded in a shower of blinding blue sparks. Barnaby’s internal battery, supercharged with military-grade capacitors, discharged ten thousand volts directly into the central mainframe. The facility's primary surge arresters blew out with deafening pops.
