Chapter 29 - THE SINS OF THE PATRIARCH

Julian’s eyes widened—not with defiance, but with the sudden, terrifying realization that the brother he had written off as weak was utterly incapable of mercy.

*BANG.*

The round took Julian in the right knee. Julian shrieked in agony, his leg buckling beneath him as he crashed onto the wet concrete pier, clutching his shattered joint.

"You... you shot me!" Julian wheezed, thrashing against the cold stone.

"That was for the twenty-seven seconds," Daniel said, his voice colder than the Atlantic wind howling through the sea-gate.

He took another step forward and raised the weapon again.

*BANG.*

Julian screamed again as the second round tore through his other shoulder, completely neutralizing any ability to reach for a hidden blade or trigger a detonation device. He lay flat on his back, gasping, blood pooling around his head like a halo of crimson.

"And that was for Thomas," Daniel whispered.

Daniel kicked the heavy satchel of cryptographic keys away from Julian’s reach, sending it skittering across the pier. He leaned down, placing the hot barrel of the 9mm directly beneath Julian’s chin, forcing his head back.

"Now tell me," Daniel commanded, his voice shaking with restrained fury. "Who gave the order for Lily? Who ordered the assessment? Not mother. Mother is a coward hiding behind teacups. Who is at the top of the Vanguard Foundation?"

Julian choked on his own blood, a wet, rattling laugh escaping his lips. "You... you really don't know, do you? You thought grandfather died twenty years ago in that hospice in Zurich."

Daniel’s heart stopped.

"Grandfather?" Daniel whispered. "Arthur Mercer died when I was twenty-two. I buried him."

"You buried an empty casket, Danny," Julian coughed, blood bubbling from his mouth. "Just like you buried Thomas. The patriarch never dies. He just retires to the shadow council. He’s ninety-four years old, living in a private compound in the Swiss Alps, watching us tear each other apart like dogs in a pit. He drafted the Fourth Generation contract. He wanted to see which of us was ruthless enough to take the mantle."

Julian’s eyes rolled back slightly, his consciousness slipping away under the catastrophic blood loss. "The chain... Danny... the chain wasn't an assessment. It was an invitation. Grandfather wanted to see if you would fight... or if you would let Lily be taken into the fold."

Heavy boots echoed down the metal catwalk above them.

Daniel whipped his weapon upward, but relaxed his grip when he saw Marcus Vance leading a squad of heavily armed Federal Tactical Hostage Rescue agents down the stairs, their weapons trained on every shadow. Behind them, two medics were carrying Thomas on a field stretcher, his vitals stabilized with emergency plasma.

"Hold your fire!" Marcus roared, flashing his federal badge. "Federal agents! Scene is secure!"

Marcus reached the pier, taking in the bloody carnage, the fallen Vanguard guards, and Julian bleeding out on the concrete. He looked at Daniel, whose face was covered in concrete dust and soot, the gun still gripped tightly in his blood-stained hand.

"It’s over, Daniel," Marcus said quietly, placing a firm, steadying hand on Daniel’s shoulder. "We intercepted the Vanguard board at the upper gate. We have their drives. We have their names. The Department of Justice has just issued sixty-four federal indictments across five states. The foundation is finished."

Daniel slowly lowered the weapon. The adrenaline began to drain from his body, leaving behind a crushing, bone-deep exhaustion that threatened to pull him to his knees.

"He needs medical attention," Daniel said, nodding toward Julian. "Keep him alive. I want him to spend every single day of the rest of his life inside a six-by-eight concrete cell, knowing that he failed."

"He’s going to ADX Florence," Marcus confirmed. "He will never see sunlight again."

Daniel turned his back on his dying twin, walked to the edge of the pier, and watched the cold Atlantic waves crash against the concrete foundation. For the first time in two years, the invisible chain around his chest felt loose.

The monster was locked away. The files were seized.
