Chapter 17 - BLOOD ON THE PIER

Julian’s face went chalk-white. "You’re lying. You wouldn't risk her life like that!"

"Try me," Daniel snarled.

In that split second of hesitation, Daniel lunged forward. He grabbed Julian’s gun hand, twisting it upward as a gunshot shattered the night, the bullet grazing the Land Rover's roof. Daniel drove his forehead straight into Julian’s nose with sickening crunch. The lawyer collapsed onto the wet tarmac, clutching his bleeding face.

From the surrounding pickup trucks, gunfire erupted.

Daniel dove behind the engine block of his SUV as rounds tore through the metal doors and blew out the tires. Lead hissed through the storm air. He drew his concealed sidearm and fired three controlled shots, dropping the nearest contractor into the drainage ditch.

Suddenly, an ear-splitting air horn shattered the chaos.

A massive flatbed tow truck smashed through the second pickup truck at sixty miles per hour, sending it flipping end over end into the marsh. Marcus leaned out of the tow truck's armored cab, firing an automatic shotgun with deadly precision.

"Daniel! Get in!" Marcus bellowed.

Daniel sprinted through the crossfire, sliding across the hood of the wrecked pickup, and hauled himself into the passenger seat of Marcus’s truck.

"Where is she?" Daniel yelled over the roar of the diesel engine.

"The yacht is untying its lines right now!" Marcus shouted, spinning the steering wheel and launching the heavy rig down the dock access road. "Vance’s extraction team managed to intercept Rebecca at the second checkpoint. They have Lily on board the ship!"

Daniel’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen. "Step on it."
