Chapter 28 - THE MIDNIGHT RAID ON THE FOUNDATION

The suppressed crack of Daniel’s carbine shattered the bunker’s heavy silence.
The round took Julian high in the left shoulder, tearing through his bespoke coat and spinning him violently backward against the steel table. At the same instant, the red laser dots on Daniel’s chest shifted as the four Vanguard guards opened fire.
Muzzle flashes strobed through the darkness. High-caliber rounds ripped into the concrete pillar beside Daniel, showering him in jagged stone fragments and choking dust. Daniel dove behind the rusted housing of an old industrial generator, returning fire with three disciplined bursts.
The first guard collapsed, struck in the neck. The second guard took two rounds to the center chest and went down hard against the conference table, scattering silver briefcases and stacks of bearer bonds across the floor.
"Kill him!" Julian screamed from behind the table, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his composure completely shattered. "Kill the bastard!"
The remaining two guards laid down suppressing fire, advancing on Daniel’s position with tactical precision. Daniel was pinned. Concrete dust burned his eyes, and his ammunition counter showed only seven rounds left in the magazine.
Suddenly, a deafening metallic screech echoed through the room.
Thomas—battered, bleeding, but fueled by two decades of pure rage—had managed to tip his heavy steel chair backward, snapping the brittle plastic zip-ties against the sharp edge of an artillery bracket. With a roar that rattled the bunker walls, Thomas lunged forward, grabbing the fallen guard’s assault rifle from the floor.
*RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!*
Thomas fired a sweeping arc from the hip. The two advancing guards were cut down instantly, their bodies collapsing into the pool of churning seawater rising from the floor grates.
"Danny! Move!" Thomas roared, coughing up blood, firing a burst toward the steel conference table.
Daniel surged from behind the generator, sprinting toward the table with his 9mm drawn. The six Vanguard board members were screaming, scrambling toward the rear emergency blast doors like rats in a flooded cellar.
Julian was on his feet, stumbling toward the narrow corridor that led to the bunker’s private submarine pen. Blood poured down his left arm, leaving a bright crimson trail across the gray concrete.
"Thomas! Stay down!" Daniel yelled, vaulting over the table.
"Don't let him reach the water!" Thomas shouted, collapsing to his knees, his strength finally failing him. "There’s a high-speed submersible in the pen! If he gets into the Atlantic trench, he’s gone forever!"
Daniel didn't stop. He kicked through the heavy steel door, sprinting down the wet, slippery catwalk that overlooked the underground submarine dock.
Fifty feet below, the black ocean water surged through a massive reinforced sea-gate, rising and falling in violent swells. Docked alongside the concrete pier was a sleek, black carbon-fiber submersed craft, its twin turboprops already humming to life, vibrating through the metal flooring.
Julian was at the bottom of the iron spiral staircase, his bloody hand slipping on the handrail, dragging a heavy waterproof satchel containing the master cryptographic keys to the Vanguard Foundation's global assets.
Daniel took the stairs three at a time, vaulting over the final railing and landing heavily on the concrete pier fifteen feet below. The impact jarred his knees, but the adrenaline coursing through his veins drowned out the pain.
Julian spun around, drawing a compact titanium pistol with his good hand.
*CLICK.*
The chamber was empty. Julian had fired his last round during the ambush.
Julian stared at the empty gun, then slowly dropped it onto the wet concrete. He raised his hands, chest heaving, his face pale from blood loss, his dark eyes burning with pure, unyielding hatred.
"You won't shoot me, Danny," Julian said, his voice trembling with a mixture of pain and arrogant conviction. "You don't have the stomach for it. Look at me. I have your face. I have your blood. If you kill me, you kill the only part of this family that had the strength to rule."
Daniel walked toward him, the barrel of his silver 9mm lowered, his gaze locked onto the identical face that had tormented his daughter.
"You're right about one thing, Julian," Daniel said softly, the ocean spray misting across his face. "We have the same blood."
Daniel raised the gun.
May you like
"But you aren't my family."
