Chapter 25 - THE BLOOD AUCTION OF MONTAUK

Daniel didn't hesitate.

Years of torment, fear, and survival had stripped away his hesitation. He grabbed the leather-bound ledger from the safe, thrust the silver 9mm into his waistband, and shoved Evelyn hard into the corner of the bathroom.

"Stay down," he commanded.

He drew the weapon, clicked off the safety, and crept toward the suite's living room. The heavy oak door of Room 402 hung open, the lock blown apart by high-caliber rounds. On the carpet outside lay the two federal agents assigned to guard the corridor, pooling blood from clean, suppressed shots to the head.

Professional. Cold. Military precision.

Footsteps receded rapidly down the emergency fire stairs at the end of the hall. Daniel dashed to the threshold, his weapon raised, but the stairwell door was already swinging shut. Through the wired-glass window, he caught only a fleeting glimpse of a tall man in a charcoal wool trench coat—a silhouette that looked terrifyingly identical to his own.

Julian.

Daniel didn't pursue. His first instinct—his only instinct—was Lily. He pulled his phone from his pocket with shaking hands and dialed the secure line to the Vermont safehouse.

The phone rang once. Twice. Three times.

*"Daniel?"* Rebecca’s voice answered, breathless, tense.

"Are you secure?" Daniel demanded, his eyes scanning the empty corridor. "Where is Lily?"

*"She’s with me in the reinforced basement. Agent Miller and three marshals are outside on the perimeter. Daniel, what’s happening? Marcus called ten minutes ago—someone breached the Department of Justice database in Washington. All our location files were wiped."*

"He knows where you are," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "Pack whatever you can carry. Do not wait for federal transport. Take Miller’s unmarked cruiser and head north toward the Canadian border. I will meet you at the old logging depot in Colebrook. Do not stop for anyone. Do you hear me? Not even police."

*"Daniel, who is he?"* Rebecca pleaded, panic bleeding into her tone.

"He’s my brother," Daniel said bitterly. "The one they hid in the dark."

He ended the call, tucked the phone away, and turned back to the ledger. He flipped through the brittle parchment pages, his eyes scanning the dense, handwritten entries penned in his grandfather’s elegant cursive.

The ledger was not an accounting book. It was an inventory of assets belonging to the Vanguard Foundation—a private, unsanctioned syndicate formed by five of the country's wealthiest families in 1968. For over fifty years, they had operated behind philanthropic fronts, buying political influence, manipulating judicial appointments, and securing control over private defense contractors.

And at the very back of the book was a fresh entry, stamped with yesterday's date:

*ASSET CONSOLIDATION: TERMINATION OF LEGACY TRUSTS. FINAL LIQUIDATION AUCTION AT THE MONTAUK COMPOUND. ALL OUTSTANDING COLLATERAL TO BE TRANSFERRED TO VANGUARD OVERSEAS.*

Montauk.

The Mercer family’s oldest and most secretive holding—an abandoned coastal artillery fortress from World War II, purchased by Daniel's grandfather in the 1970s under the guise of a private wildlife sanctuary.

Daniel knew the place. He had visited it once when he was ten years old, remembering the massive concrete bunkers half-swallowed by the dunes, the cold Atlantic waves crashing against the jagged cliffs, and the underground tunnels where no child was ever permitted to play.

That was where the syndicate was gathering to divide the spoils of Vance’s collapsed empire. That was where Julian had gone to claim total dominion over the Mercer bloodline.

Daniel looked down at his mother, who sat shivering on the bathroom floor, her cold smile still plastered across her face.

"You think you can stop him, Daniel?" she whispered, coughing lightly. "Julian has three private security teams armed with military-grade equipment. You are a civilian with a stolen gun and a broken heart."

Daniel leaned down, his eyes colder than the sea that had swallowed Vance.

"I'm not a civilian anymore, Mother," Daniel said quietly. "I'm a father who has nothing left to lose."

He stepped over the threshold, locked the suite door behind him, and vanished into the storm.
