Chapter 24 - THE CONFESSION OF ROOM 402

The rain over Boston fell in relentless gray sheets, drumming against the high arched windows of St. Jude’s Psychiatric Institute. The prestigious private sanitarium sat behind wrought-iron gates in the wealthy enclave of Brookline, its manicured grounds masking the reality of what it truly was: a five-star gilded prison for the dangerous, disgraced elite.

Daniel Mercer stood outside Room 402, dressed in a dry charcoal overcoat. His knuckles were raw, his face hardened by exhaustion, but his eyes burned with an icy resolve that had not existed two years ago. Lily was safe, currently under round-the-clock protection by federal marshals in a secure safehouse in Vermont with Rebecca.

Now, it was time to tear down the last lie.

He pushed open the heavy mahogany door.

The suite was luxurious—hardwood floors, silk drapes, a baby grand piano in the corner, and fresh white lilies in crystal vases. In a high-backed velvet armchair by the rain-streaked window sat Evelyn Mercer. She wore a tailored cashmere cardigan, her silver hair pinned in an immaculate chignon, holding a cup of Earl Grey tea as if she were waiting for guests at a Sunday brunch.

She did not flinch when Daniel closed the door behind him and locked it with a heavy brass deadbolt.

"You smell like salt and smoke, Daniel," Evelyn said without turning around. Her voice was serene, completely detached from the wreckage of the empire she had built. "I assume Vance proved to be as incompetent at sea as he was on land."

"Vance is at the bottom of the Atlantic," Daniel said, his voice flat, stepping into her field of view. "And the Coast Guard has seized every offshore account under the Fourth Generation trust."

Evelyn set her teacup down on the saucer with a delicate *clink*. She finally looked up at him, her pale blue eyes calculating, assessing, entirely devoid of maternal warmth. "A minor setback. Money is merely ink on paper, Daniel. Power is lineage. Power is knowing how to make the next generation kneel."

Daniel walked past her, ignoring her chilling words, and headed straight into the en-suite bathroom.

"What are you doing?" she asked, her voice sharpening with the first flicker of irritation.

Daniel approached the heavy, gilded wall mirror above the marble sink. He pulled an antique bronze key—recovered from the hard drive case Thomas had left behind—and inspected the ornate carved acanthus leaves along the mirror's mahogany frame. Near the bottom-left corner, concealed behind a carved wooden petal, was a hidden keyhole.

He inserted the key and turned it.

A loud mechanical click echoed through the bathroom. The entire six-foot mirror swung outward on heavy concealed hinges, revealing a shallow, reinforced wall safe embedded in the concrete foundation behind the drywall.

Evelyn appeared in the bathroom doorway, her knuckles white as she gripped the doorframe. The serenity on her face had shattered, replaced by a vicious, predatory fury. "Step away from that, Daniel. You don't have the stomach for what is inside that safe. You never did. You were always the soft one."

"Soft enough to let you chain my daughter to a post while you smiled for your socialite friends?" Daniel snapped, wrenching open the safe door.

Inside lay three items: a leather-bound journal embossed with the Mercer family crest, a silver 9mm handgun, and a stack of birth certificates tied with a black silk ribbon.

Daniel picked up the certificates.

The first was his own: *Daniel Arthur Mercer, born June 12.*

The second was Thomas’s: *Thomas William Mercer, born August 4.*

And beneath it lay a third certificate.

Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. The name was printed in cold, institutional ink: *Julian Alexander Mercer. Born identical twin to Daniel Arthur Mercer. Declared deceased at birth—transferred to the Vanguard Foundation for Genetic Development.*

Daniel stared at the paper, the world spinning violently on its axis. "Identical twin... I had a twin?"

Evelyn laughed, a cruel, mocking sound that chilled Daniel to the marrow of his bones. "You didn't just have a twin, Daniel. You were the spare. Julian was born first. Stronger, sharper, completely devoid of empathy. Grandfather saw greatness in him. But when the trust was drafted, the board required an heir who could smile for the cameras, an heir the public would love. So we kept you in the light, Daniel. And we raised Julian in the dark."

"Where is he?" Daniel demanded, slamming the certificates onto the marble counter, stepping into Evelyn's space until she was forced to lean back against the wall. "Where is Julian?!"

"He’s already where you can never touch him," Evelyn whispered, a sick smile curling her lips. "He runs the Vanguard Foundation now. He was the one who ordered Lily to be tested, Daniel. The chain wasn't a punishment for bad behavior. It was the preliminary assessment. We needed to see if she broke like you... or if she had Julian’s steel."

Daniel grabbed his mother by the shoulders, his control snapping. "You used my daughter as a lab rat?!"

"I prepared her for the throne!" Evelyn hissed, her eyes wild with madness. "And now that Vance is gone, Julian has no reason to hide. He is coming for her, Daniel. And unlike Vance, my firstborn does not leave survivors."

Before Daniel could speak, the bathroom lights flickered.

From the corridor outside Room 402, two muffled gunshots cracked through the heavy silence of the sanitarium, followed by the heavy thump of the security guard's body collapsing against the outer door.
