Chapter 22 - ESCAPE FROM THE BLACK WATER

The impact of the blast door vibrating through the yacht’s superstructure signaled the imminent death of *The Leviathan*. Water was already rising past Daniel’s ankles, icy and black, churning with debris, medical gauze, and shattered glass.
"Daniel! We have to go NOW!" Rebecca screamed over the roar of rushing seawater. She pulled at his jacket, her face pale under the crimson strobe lights.
Daniel tore his eyes from the reinforced glass. On the other side, through the tinted pane, gunshots flashed like lightning in the smoke, followed by the dull thud of an explosion that cracked the inner bulkhead. There was no time to mourn. There was only the child in his arms, shivering against his neck, clinging to him as if he were the only solid thing in a collapsing universe.
"Hold onto me, Lily," Daniel said fiercely, pressing a kiss to her soaked hair. "Daddy’s got you. Do not let go, no matter what."
"I won't let go, Daddy," the little girl sobbed, burying her face into his throat.
Daniel gripped Rebecca's hand. "Follow my footsteps. If the deck angles any sharper, grab the wall cables!"
They sprinted down the narrow crew passage as the yacht tilted sharply to the port side. Gravity became their enemy. Daniel braced his shoulder against the painted steel walls, pushing against the incline. Every step was a fight against the rushing tide. Doors along the corridor were bursting open from water pressure, spewing dark, freezing torrents into the hallway.
Ahead, a spiral steel staircase led upward toward the salon and the open observation deck. But as they reached the base of the stairs, an electrical transformer exploded directly above them, showering the stairwell in sparks and dropping a heavy aluminum ceiling panel across the steps.
"Clear it!" Daniel yelled.
Rebecca scrambled forward, kicking and hauling at the jagged metal panel with bare hands, heedless of the jagged edges cutting into her palms. Adrenaline fueled her strength. With a guttural cry, she wrenched the panel aside, clearing a narrow gap just wide enough for them to squeeze through.
Daniel pushed her up first. "Go, go!"
He followed, cradling Lily tightly against his chest with his left arm while pulling himself up the slippery steps with his right. Just as his feet cleared the bottom landing, a massive wall of seawater breached the lower corridor behind them, obliterating the stairs beneath a swirling, violent whirlpool.
They burst into the main salon. What had once been a multi-million-dollar luxury palace of polished mahogany and leather was now an apocalyptic wreck. Grand floor-to-ceiling windows had shattered inward under the onslaught of thirty-foot waves. The freezing Atlantic wind tore through the room, whipping rain and salt spray across the overturned furniture.
Through the storm, Daniel saw blinding searchlights cutting across the churning sea.
A massive United States Coast Guard cutter was holding position less than fifty yards away, its searchlights locked onto the sinking stern of *The Leviathan*. A rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB) manned by Coast Guard rescue swimmers was battling through the mountainous waves, trying desperately to close the distance.
*“Mercer! Over here!”* a voice roared through a megaphone from the rescue boat.
"The stern is going under!" Rebecca shouted, pointing backward.
The aft section of the yacht was already submerged, the ocean greedily swallowing the helipad. The bow was rising into the air, steel framing groaning like a dying dinosaur as the ship prepared to make its final plunge into the two-mile-deep abyss.
"The Zodiac is gone!" Daniel shouted, seeing the starboard railing torn away by a falling mast. "We have to jump!"
Rebecca looked at the black, churning sea thirty feet below and froze. The waves were terrifying, white-capped monsters crashing against the hull. "Daniel, Lily won't survive the impact!"
Daniel pulled off his heavy waterproof jacket and wrapped Lily tightly inside it, securing the heavy zipper and cinching the thermal hood around her face. He unclipped his tactical belt and strapped Lily directly against his chest, looping the heavy nylon through his harness until she was locked against his sternum.
"Look at me, Rebecca," Daniel commanded, grabbing her chin and forcing her eyes away from the terrifying drop. "You jump first. Clear the hull so the undertow doesn't drag you into the propellers. The Coast Guard is right there. Swim for their lights. I will be right behind you."
"Daniel—"
"Jump! NOW!"
Rebecca took a deep, shuddering breath, looked into Daniel’s eyes, and leaped over the railing into the black abyss. She vanished into the froth of a breaking wave. A second later, her orange life vest bobbed to the surface, and the Coast Guard rescue swimmers gunned their twin outboards toward her.
Daniel turned to Lily. He held her tiny face between his hands. "Take a deep breath and close your eyes, sweet pea. Daddy is going to make us fly."
Lily squeezed her eyes shut and locked her tiny arms around his neck with every ounce of strength in her little body. "I love you, Daddy."
"I love you more than the world," Daniel whispered.
