Chapter 23 - THE SAFEHOUSE IN THE FOG

Cold. Pure, paralyzing cold hit Daniel like a hammer, knocking the breath from his lungs as he plunged into the Atlantic.

The suction of the sinking yacht grabbed at his legs like invisible hands, pulling him downward into the black depths. His ears popped from the sudden pressure. Every survival instinct screamed at him to kick, to fight, but the extra weight of Lily secured to his chest made every movement an agonizing battle. He kicked frantically, his combat boots clawing at the water, his right hand shielding the back of Lily's head from debris.

*Not like this. Not after everything.*

With a desperate, lung-burning surge, Daniel kicked upward toward the diffused glow of the rescue searchlights. His head broke the surface into the screaming wind. He gasped for air, coughing out brine, and instantly reached down to peel back the jacket hood.

Lily was coughing, sputtering water, but she took a ragged breath and began to wail at the top of her lungs. To Daniel’s ears, that terrified cry was the most glorious sound in human history.

"She's breathing! She's alive!" Daniel roared into the storm.

Strong hands grabbed him by the tactical vest. Two Coast Guard rescue swimmers in black neoprene pulled Daniel and Lily up over the gunwale of the inflatable rescue boat. Blankets were instantly wrapped around them as the boat surged across the swells toward the towering gray flank of the Coast Guard cutter *Tahoma*.

Ten minutes later, Daniel was sitting on a metal bench inside the cutter’s warm, brightly lit medical bay.

Lily, wrapped in three layers of dry thermal wool, was sipping warm broth from a plastic cup held by a female corpsman. Her shivering had finally subsided, though her huge brown eyes never left Daniel’s face. Rebecca sat beside her, her hands bandaged with sterile dressing, wrapped in a blanket, looking stunned but entirely alive.

The heavy steel door of the medical bay clicked open.

Special Agent Marcus Vance—no relation to Daniel’s uncle, but the lead federal investigator who had spent two years tracking the Mercer Trust’s illegal shell corporations—stepped inside. He looked exhausted, his hair damp from the spray, carrying a heavy water-sealed Pelican case.

"The yacht is gone, Mr. Mercer," Marcus said quietly, pulling up a stool. "She went down twenty minutes ago in eight hundred feet of water. The Coast Guard cutter’s sonar confirmed the hull ruptured upon hitting the bottom."

Daniel felt a hollow ache in his chest. "Did anyone else come up? Any survivors from the lower bridge?"

Marcus shook his head grimly. "We pulled six crew members off the forward deck. Vance’s personal guard didn't make it. And... your brother."

Daniel closed his eyes. The memory of Thomas standing behind that reinforced glass, saluting him through the smoke, burned behind his eyelids. "Did you find a body?"

"No," Marcus admitted. "The suction in that area was catastrophic. But we found something else." Marcus placed the Pelican case on the stainless-steel examination table and popped the heavy latches.

Inside rested an intact, waterproof military-grade hard drive, painted matte green, stamped with a serial number Daniel recognized immediately: Thomas’s old tactical unit insignia from his time in private maritime security.

"We pulled this out of an emergency locator beacon that detached from the yacht thirty seconds before the final explosion," Marcus said, leaning in. "It was encrypted with a twenty-digit alphanumeric key. Our cyber team spent twenty minutes trying to crack it until one of my analysts noticed the hint embedded in the code."

Daniel swallowed hard. "What was the hint?"

"A date. October 14th, twenty years ago."

The day of the lodge fire.

Daniel leaned forward, his fingers shaking slightly as he reached toward the ruggedized keyboard of the reader unit Marcus plugged in. He typed the digits of the date, followed by the four numbers Thomas had carved into the wooden banister of their childhood bedroom: *1-0-1-4-7-7-4-2*.

The screen flashed green. *ACCESS GRANTED.*

A single video file occupied the desktop. Marcus tapped the touchpad.

The video opened on a dimly lit room with concrete walls. Sitting in front of the camera was Thomas, his burn scars stark against his pale skin, wearing a scarred flight jacket. He looked directly into the lens with that same unwavering, haunting intensity.

*"Danny,"* Thomas’s recorded voice spoke through the monitor speakers, quiet, sharp, and steady. *"If you’re watching this, Vance is dead, and I’m either at the bottom of the sea or halfway to a place nobody can ever find me. But don't you dare think this ends with the sinking of The Leviathan."*

Daniel held his breath.

*"The garden party... the chain around Lily’s leg... it wasn't Vance’s idea,"* Thomas continued, his eyes hardening into flint. *"Vance was a coward who took orders. Mother was the architect. She was always the architect. Room 402 at St. Jude’s isn't a hospital room, Danny. It’s an operations center. Go look behind the mirror in her bathroom. Look at the ledger dated 1999. And Danny... watch your back. Because the third brother isn't dead either."*

The screen went black.

Daniel’s blood turned to ice. He looked up at Rebecca, whose eyes widened in sheer horror.

May you like

"Third brother?" Daniel whispered into the silence of the medical bay. "I only had one brother."
