Chapter 20 - THE TWENTY-SEVEN SECONDS OF TRUTH

Arthur Vance smiled, a victor surveying his newly conquered territory. He tapped the electronic keypad beside the glass partition. The magnetic lock disengaged with a heavy hiss.

Daniel stepped into the surgical theater.

Lily reached for him immediately, her tiny arms wrapping around his neck as Daniel scooped her off the gurney. He held her tight against his chest, feeling the frantic, rapid flutter of her little heart.

"I've got you, baby," Daniel whispered into her hair. "Daddy’s here. It’s over."

"How touching," Vance said, motioning to two masked doctors waiting in the corner. "Now, Daniel, place her back on the table. The sedation takes only a few seconds."

Daniel didn't move. He gently handed Lily to Rebecca, who pulled the girl into her arms behind the heavy oak desk.

Then Daniel turned to face Arthur Vance.

"You're right about one thing, Vance," Daniel said, pulling an old, cracked smartphone from his pocket—the very phone that had recorded the missing footage from the garden party two years ago. "My mother was theatrical. But you forgot who taught her how to build security systems."

Vance’s eyes narrowed. "What is that?"

"Twenty-seven seconds," Daniel said. "That’s how long the hidden camera behind the smoke detector recorded before my mother shut it down that afternoon. The police thought the tape was corrupted. The court thought it was blank."

Daniel tapped the screen.

A video played, its audio blasting through the theater’s surround-sound system.

It wasn't Evelyn chaining Lily.

The video showed Arthur Vance himself, standing on the Mercer terrace, whispering into Evelyn's ear while two men in suits held the iron chain.

*“If you don't secure her to the stone, Evelyn,”* Vance’s voice echoed clearly on the recording, *“I will execute your son on the driveway right now. Make it look like family cruelty, or Daniel dies before sunset.”*

Vance froze. The color drained from his aristocratic face.

"Evelyn didn't chain Lily to save her from the contract," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with a horrifying, sudden revelation. "She chained Lily to save *me*. She took the blame, went to prison, and accepted the hatred of the entire world... because you held a gun to my head."

"It doesn't matter," Vance sneered, reaching into his coat pocket for a concealed panic button. "We are in international waters. No court—"

Suddenly, the yacht listed violently to the port side.

A deafening siren began to wail across the ship. The main lights flickered and died, replaced by the strobing red glare of naval emergency beacons.

Through the observation windows of the yacht, the towering gray hull of a United States Coast Guard cutter emerged from the rain-soaked darkness, flanking *The Leviathan* with high-caliber deck guns trained directly on the bridge. Over the ship's marine radio, a voice boomed with absolute authority:

*“Unidentified vessel Leviathan, this is the United States Coast Guard. Power down your engines and prepare to be boarded under federal warrant for maritime human trafficking and high treason.”*

Vance stumbled backward against the surgical trays, his perfection shattered into raw panic.

Daniel took one step forward, towering over the trembling old man. "The chain didn't break two years ago, Vance. It breaks right now."

Before Daniel could reach him, the yacht’s floor shuddered again—not from an external ram, but from an internal blast deep in the lower engine room.

The steel walls groaned. The smell of burning electrical cables filled the air.

And then, from the shadows of the breached corridor behind them, a slow, mocking round of applause echoed through the smoke.

A man stepped into the red emergency light. He was tall, dressed in naval fatigues, his face half-covered in old burn scars—a face Daniel had not seen since he was twelve years old. A face he had buried in an empty grave twenty years ago.

"Well done, little brother," the man said, lowering his assault rifle with a terrifying smile. "You finally made him blink. Now let’s see who survives the sinking."

Daniel pulled Lily and Rebecca behind him, his heart stopping in absolute disbelief.

"Thomas?" Daniel breathed into the rising smoke. "You’re alive?"
