Chapter 12 - THE 3:00 A.M. ASSAULT ON THE LAKE HOUSE

The glass in the conservatory shattered into ten thousand diamonds.
Rebecca dropped to the hardwood floor, shielding five-year-old Lily beneath her own body as the shockwave of a stun grenade rattled the foundations of the lake house. Smoke, smelling of burned magnesium and sulfur, poured through the shattered French doors. Outside, the headlights of two unmarked black SUVs flooded the living room with an blinding, clinical white glare.
"Mommy?" Lily cried, her tiny hands clutching Rebecca’s woolen sweater. "The bad men? Is it Nana?"
"Shh, baby, stay down! Cover your ears!" Rebecca whispered furiously. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
From the front porch came the muffled thumps of suppressed gunshots. Rosa, the loyal housekeeper who had lived with them since the trial, was screaming somewhere down the kitchen hallway. Then, the sickening thud of a body hitting the floor.
Footsteps—deliberate, heavy, military-grade boots—strode across the shattered glass.
A man stepped into the smoky living room. He wore a carbon-fiber helmet and a dark gray tactical vest with no insignia, no flag, and no badge. In his gloved right hand was a silenced pistol; in his left, a titanium handheld scanner.
He stopped three feet from where Rebecca crouched behind the overturned mahogany dining table.
"Rebecca Mercer," the man said. His voice was flat, modulated through a throat microphone. "Hand over the child. The contract has expired. Mr. Vance requires delivery before sunrise."
"I don't know who Vance is!" Rebecca screamed, reaching blindly behind her into the dark drawer of the sideboard. Her fingers closed around Daniel’s spare 9mm pistol. "Get out of my house or I’ll kill you!"
The intruder didn't flinch. He raised his weapon with mechanical detachment. "You have five seconds to step away from Subject Alpha. Five. Four—"
A deafening roar split the night air.
The perimeter window behind the intruder exploded inward as Daniel’s Land Rover smashed straight through the outer wall, pulverizing the bay windows and crushing the dining table into splinters. The heavy bumper struck the armed man, hurtling him across the room into the stone hearth.
The driver’s side door flew open. Daniel leapt into the smoky chaos, an iron tire iron gripped in his fist, his eyes wild with feral rage.

"Touch my daughter," Daniel roared, slamming the iron bar across the intruder’s helmet with bone-shattering force, "and I will tear your world to ash!"
