Chapter 8 - The Secret of Elena Morales

That evening, the Vance estate returned to a quiet, serene stillness.

The amber security lockdown lights had been deactivated, replaced by the warm, familiar glow of interior lamps.

Elena sat in the private study across from Marcus, who poured two glasses of sparkling apple cider.

Marcus handed her a crystal flute and slid a thick manila folder across the mahogany desk.

"I think it's time we talked about who you really are, Elena," Marcus said softly.

Elena looked down at the folder, her heart skipping a beat.

Inside were copies of academic transcripts from the Stanford School of Nursing and records from a private foster care foundation in Chicago.

"You knew?" Elena whispered, looking up with vulnerable brown eyes.

"I knew the day your agency application crossed my desk," Marcus replied with a gentle, rare smile.

"You aren't just a nanny, Elena.

You are the daughter of Dr. Robert Morales—the chief pediatric surgeon who saved my life after my car accident ten years ago."

Elena looked down at her hands, tears glistening in her eyes.

"My father always spoke of your honor, Mr. Vance.

When he passed away last year and left our community clinic in debt, I needed a way to earn enough to keep his foundation alive.

I took this job through the agency because I wanted to help children, but I never expected to walk into a battlefield."

Marcus reached across the desk, placing his hand over hers with steady, enduring strength.

"Your father saved my life, Elena.

And you saved my son's life two days ago.
