In the federal district court three weeks later, Judge Evelyn Harris handed down the final sentences for the Sterling syndicate.
Judge Harold Sterling sat in a wheelchair at the defense table, his head bowed in complete disgrace.
Victoria Sterling sat beside him, weeping silently into her handcuffed hands.
Judge Harris struck her heavy wooden gavel with ringing authority.
"Harold Sterling, for forty counts of racketeering, judicial bribery, and money laundering, you are sentenced to twenty-two years in federal prison."
"Victoria Sterling, for felony assault on a minor, conspiracy to commit fraud, and corporate embezzlement, you are sentenced to twelve years at the Danbury Correctional Facility without parole."
As the marshals led the convicted criminals away through the side security exit, Marcus and Elena walked out through the front doors of the courthouse.
A sea of reporters and photographers flashed their cameras, but Marcus and Elena paid them no mind.
They walked down the broad granite steps hand in hand, stepping into the warm, bright sunlight of a clear autumn day.
