Chapter 20 - The Unbroken Shield

Three months later.

The warm afternoon sun bathed the coastal gardens of the Moretti Citadel in brilliant golden light. The sound of gentle ocean waves crashing against the cliffs below created a peaceful, serene melody.

Dante Moretti sat at a wrought-iron garden table outside the restored master library, wearing a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing his tattooed forearms. He was reading a financial report, looking relaxed and healthy.

Across the lawn, five-year-old Lily was chasing a golden retriever puppy, her laughter ringing happily across the estate. Elena sat on a wooden bench nearby, wearing an elegant cream sundress, sketching the coastal scenery in a leather notebook.

The nightmare was over. The Valenti syndicate was completely dismantled, Vanessa was serving a life sentence, and the Moretti empire was more prosperous and secure than ever before.

Dante set his coffee cup down, watching Elena and Lily with a quiet, profound peace he had never known in his thirty-five years of life.

Suddenly, his chief lieutenant—a newly appointed young loyalist named Leo—walked briskly out onto the terrace, holding a heavy silver platter.

On the platter lay a single, thick black envelope stamped with an unfamiliar wax seal depicting a coiled serpent around an anchor.

Dante’s sharp gray eyes narrowed instantly. He picked up the envelope, tearing open the heavy wax seal.

Inside was a single, high-resolution photograph taken from a long-distance camera lens.

The photograph showed five-year-old Lily playing in the garden just five minutes prior... but centered directly over her small chest was a microscopic crosshair grid.

On the back of the photograph, a message was written in sharp, blood-red ink:

The Allied Council in Rome does not recognize child rulers. We are coming to collect the heiress in forty-eight hours.

Dante’s blood ran cold. His knuckles turned white as he crushed the photograph in his fist.

He slowly stood up, looking out over the sparkling blue ocean toward the horizon. The peaceful warmth in his gray eyes instantly vanished, replaced by an ancient, terrifying fire that burned hotter than any war he had ever fought.

He pulled out his satellite phone, his voice dropping into a low, lethal whisper:

"Assemble the fleet. We're going to Rome."
