Chapter 1 - The Butter on the Silver Dish

The morning sun filtered through the high arched windows of the Moretti estate, casting golden light across the polished mahogany dining table. Vincent Moretti sat at the head of the table, his tall, muscular frame commanding the room. At thirty-eight, Chicago’s most feared mafia boss moved with quiet, lethal precision. His dark hair was swept back neatly, and light stubble shadowed his sharp, handsome jawline. He wore a fitted black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing intricate black tattoos that snaked up his arms, over his hands, and across his neck. A luxury watch gleamed on his wrist, catching the morning glare.

Across from him sat his fiancée, Vanessa Hale. At thirty-three, the blonde beauty looked immaculate in a champagne-colored silk dress, diamond earrings sparkling in the light as she smiled warmly.

Vincent picked up a silver butter knife, spreading a thick layer of creamy butter across a fresh piece of bread. He raised the bread toward his mouth.

Suddenly, six-year-old Emma Carter broke away from her mother near the sideboard. She rushed to Vincent's side, her cream shoes clicking softly on the floor. Her long light-brown hair, tied with a pale-pink bow, bounced as she reached up and grabbed Vincent's wrist with both of her small hands, halting the bread inches from his lips.

Don’t eat that, Mr. Moretti. She put something in the butter, Emma cried, her wide eyes locked onto Vincent's face, her trembling voice laced with urgent terror.

Vincent went stock-still. He slowly lowered the piece of bread back onto his plate, his fair face hardening into a cold, unreadable mask. His dark eyes shifted slowly toward Vanessa. Without breaking eye contact with his fiancée, he reached out and slid the silver butter dish directly across the polished wood until it stopped in front of her.

You first, Vincent said, his deep, quiet voice carrying a controlled, lethal suspicion that chilled the air.

Vanessa froze. Her hand hovered uselessly above the dish. The confident smile evaporated from her face, and every drop of rosy color drained from her cheeks. Behind Vincent, Maria Carter, the housemaid, gasped softly and instinctively stepped forward to pull her young daughter against her apron.

Emma slipped out of Maria’s grip, pointing a small finger straight at Vanessa. With her other hand, she reached into a worn tear in her stuffed rabbit and pulled out a tiny, empty white glass bottle she had secretly picked up from the floor earlier.

I saw her pour this into it before you came downstairs, Emma said, her innocent certainty echoing softly through the tense room.

Vincent reached out and took the bottle from Emma’s small palm. As he turned it under the light, his jaw clenched. Scratched into the silver cap of the tiny vial was the distinctive Moretti family crest—a mark stamped exclusively on items stored inside his private, high-security vault upstairs. Vanessa took a slow, terrified step backward.

Emma suddenly pointed past Vanessa toward the grand arched doorway leading to the hallway. Vincent turned his head sharply. Standing in the entrance was his younger brother, Julian Moretti. Julian froze mid-stride, his face turning pale as his eyes locked onto the tiny silver-capped bottle resting in Vincent's tattooed hand.

That’s the man who gave it to her, Emma said, her soft voice cutting through the silence with absolute, frightened certainty.
