Chapter 11 - The Poisoned Feast's Aftermath

The suffocating silence inside Alder & Stone was heavier than a velvet shroud. Don Dante Moretti lowered his silver fork slowly, resting it beside the porcelain plate where a subtle, crystalline residue was already dissolving into the rich truffle sauce. His dark gray eyes, cold and void of any warmth, pivoted away from the dish to lock onto his fiancée, Vanessa. Standing in a tailored crimson gown, her hands trembled almost imperceptibly as her chest heaved with rapid, shallow breaths.
"Dante, darling, this is absurd!" Vanessa gasped, her voice tightening as she took a half-step backward toward the high-backed velvet chairs. "She is an unsanitary, feral child who slipped past security! You can’t possibly take the word of a street beggar over mine!"
Dante didn't answer. He didn't raise his voice either. He simply raised two fingers.
Instantly, the heavy oak doors of Alder & Stone slammed shut, locked from the inside by four towering enforcers in charcoal suits. Twenty armed guards drew their silenced sidearms in absolute, synchronized silence, forming an iron perimeter around the room.
Dante turned his gaze toward the trembling, soaked five-year-old girl standing near the entrance. Her mother, Elena, was on her knees behind her, clutching her daughter’s thin shoulders, pale with terror.
"Little one," Dante spoke, his deep baritone cutting through the heavy tension like a honed blade. "Come here."
Elena tried to hold the girl back, but the child stepped forward bravely, her worn sneakers leaving small wet footprints on the polished marble floor. She stopped right beside Dante’s leather armchair.
"What is your name?" Dante asked softly, a rare gentleness lacing his tone that made his inner circle recoil in shock.
"Lily," the child whispered, pointing a small, dirt-streaked finger at the plate. "The pretty lady with the red dress put a shiny powder from her ring into your food while you were looking at the wine list. My daddy used to make that powder... it smells like bitter almonds, and it makes people sleep forever."
Vanessa’s face turned completely ghost-white. Her jaw worked silently as if trying to formulate a lie, but no words came out.
Dante reached out, his calloused fingers gently sliding the heavy diamond engagement ring off Vanessa’s finger. He flipped the hidden latch on the underside of the setting. A fine dusting of white lethal powder spilled onto the white tablecloth.
"Search her," Dante ordered coldly.

"Dante! No! You can't do this to me!" Vanessa shrieked as two guards grabbed her arms. "My father is the head of the Allied Council! You destroy me, you destroy the peace treaty!"
Before Dante could reply, a tiny red laser dot flickered across the white tablecloth, moving swiftly up Dante's chest until it rested directly over his heart.
