Chapter 13 - Shadows in the Safehouse

The rain poured relentlessly over the iron gates of the Moretti Citadel—a massive, fortress-like estate perched atop the palisades overlooking the Hudson River. High-voltage perimeter fences and automated gun turrets hummed softly in the dark fog, guarding the most secure stronghold in the tri-state area.

Inside the sprawling master library, warm firelight flickered across floor-to-ceiling oak bookshelves.

Lily sat on a plush velvet sofa, wearing a oversized warm cotton sweater, sipping hot chocolate from a porcelain cup. Beside her, Elena was being treated by Dante’s personal physician, who was wrapping a bandage around her scraped arm.

Dante stood near the grand fireplace, unbuttoning his rain-soaked waistcoat. His broad back was covered in intricate black-and-gray tattoos, his dark hair damp as he stared down at an encrypted digital map displayed on his glass desk.

"She’s asleep," Elena whispered softly, stepping up beside Dante after the doctor departed.

Dante didn't turn around, his sharp gray eyes glued to the security monitors. "Your husband... Dr. Julian Vance. He was the head biochemist for the Valenti family before he vanished three years ago."

Elena’s eyes filled with quiet, painful tears. "Julian realized what they were using his research for—synthetic neurotoxins designed to mimic heart attacks. When he refused to finish the master batch, Lord Valenti had him executed in front of our daughter. Lily and I have been running ever since."

"Which is why Lily recognized the scent of the powder," Dante murmured, turning his head to look at the sleeping child. "Your five-year-old daughter saved my life tonight, Elena. In my world, debts of blood are paid in absolute loyalty."

Elena looked at Dante, her voice trembling. "Vanessa mentioned a secondary strike team, Don Moretti. They won't stop until Lily is dead. She’s the only one who saw the original chemical blueprints."

"Let them come," Dante growled softly, a predatory smile touching his lips. "This compound is an impenetrable fortress. Not even a military division could breach my outer—"

Suddenly, every lights inside the mansion flickered violently and plunged into pitch-black darkness.

A high-pitched, mechanical siren shrieked through the stone corridors: SECURITY BREACH. SECTOR 1 POWER GRID OFFLINE.

From the intercom system above their heads, Marcus’s voice crackled through the static—but it wasn't a warning.

"Forgive me, Don Dante," Marcus’s voice echoed chillingly. "Lord Valenti paid fifty million dollars for the backdoor access codes."
