Chapter 10 - The Shield in the Garden

Spring arrived in Chicago, bringing vibrant green leaves and blooming pink roses to the estate gardens. The afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow across the rolling lawn.

Emma, now seven years old, ran across the green grass in a bright blue dress, laughing happily as she played tag with a golden retriever puppy Vincent had bought her for her birthday. Clutched securely in her small hand was her cream velvet rabbit with its silver shield pendant gleaming in the sunlight.

Sitting at a wrought-iron table on the marble patio were Vincent and Maria.

Maria wore an elegant navy dress, drinking tea as she watched her daughter laugh. Her skin was rosy and bright, free of the exhaustion and fear that had once consumed her life.

Vincent sat across from her, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with his dark sleeves rolled up, his tattooed hands resting comfortably on the table. He looked relaxed, powerful, and entirely at peace.

"She's growing so fast," Maria said softly, looking over at Vincent with deep, eternal gratitude in her brown eyes. "Sometimes I look at her and I still can't believe how much our lives changed because of one silver butter dish."

Vincent looked out at the garden, watching Emma chase the puppy around a rose bush. A faint, genuine smile touched his sharp jawline.

"It wasn't the butter dish, Maria," Vincent said quietly, his deep voice rich with warmth. "It was her courage. In a world full of lies and betrayal, she was the only one brave enough to tell the truth."

Emma stopped running, waving excitedly toward the patio. "Mr. Moretti! Look how fast Max can run!"

Vincent stood up from the table, raising his hand to wave back at the young girl who had saved his life and healed his home. As the warm afternoon breeze carried her laughter across the sunlit garden, Vincent Moretti knew that the sanctuary he had built here would remain unbroken forever.
