Chapter 48 - THE BLACK SUBMERSIBLE AT PIER 4

“What did you do to him?” Ethan roared, tears blinding his vision as he dropped to his knees, pressing his ear to his son’s chest. The rhythm was terrifying—a double beat, frantic, mechanical, like two watches ticking at different speeds inside a single ribcage.

“The second node isn't a heart, Ethan,” Thomas explained, stepping slowly forward, his boots crunching against the wet gravel. “It’s an internal biological pacemaker designed to supply the oxygen demand of the neural processor. If you don't administer the inhibitor now, the secondary unit will starve his primary heart of blood.”

Margaret didn't drop her aim. Her mind worked through the tactical variables with brutal clarity. Thomas was advancing, offering the vial, but every instinct she possessed screamed that this was an extraction maneuver.

“Step back, Thomas,” Margaret commanded, cocking the hammer of the Glock.

“Maggie, look at your grandson!” Thomas yelled, the first crack of desperation showing in his gravelly voice. “You have forty seconds before the cardiac seizure becomes irreversible! Let the medics take him into the bay! We have the decompression chamber set up!”

“Dad, please!” Ethan begged, looking up at Margaret with shattered eyes. “Mom, give him Noah! We can’t let him die here! Look at his face!”

Noah’s lips had turned blue. His skin was burning hot to the touch, and his breath came in ragged, shallow gasps. His eyes rolled up toward the roof of the sea cave.

“Grandma...” Noah whispered, his tiny fingers clawing weakly at Ethan’s coat. “The water... it’s singing so loud...”

Margaret looked at her husband’s eyes. She knew those eyes. She had loved those eyes for twenty-five years. And in that frozen, terrible moment, she saw what had taken over the man she married: not malice, but an absolute, unyielding scientific fanaticism that viewed human life as nothing more than raw material.

“You don't want to save him, Thomas,” Margaret said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. “You just don't want your prototype to expire before you dock with the mother ship.”

Thomas stopped five feet away. His expression hardened into stone.

“You’re right,” Thomas said softly. “Now give me the child, or my men will put Ethan down where he kneels.”

Before the operators could raise their weapons, Margaret didn't fire at Thomas.

She lunged forward, grabbed the lapel of his tactical vest with her left hand, and drove the barrel of her pistol directly beneath his jaw.

At the same instant, she reached down, snagged the amber injector from his vest pocket with lightning speed, and threw her weight backward, kicking Thomas hard in the knee.

Thomas collapsed with a cry of pain as his knee buckled, and Margaret spun around, dropping to her knees beside Noah.

“Mom, what are you doing?” Ethan screamed.

May you like

“Hold his shoulder!” Margaret commanded, uncapping the needle with her teeth. “Hold him down, Ethan!”
