Chapter 26 - The Puppetmaster's Nursery

Before Ethan could protest, Thomas slammed his shoulder against the iron grating of the coal spillway, ripping the rusted bolts from the concrete. Cold, rushing air from the underground culvert blasted into the room.

“Move, Ethan! NOW!” Thomas roared, shoving Ethan down into the chute with Noah clutched tightly against his chest.

Above them, the ceiling gave a sickening, deafening groan.

*BOOM.*

The thermite charges ignited simultaneously along the industrial steel pillars. A blinding shower of white-hot magnesium rain cascaded down from the rafters. The air superheated instantly, scorching the paint from the walls.

Margaret dropped to her knees beneath the heavy iron workbench as tons of concrete and corrugated steel collapsed inward with the roar of an avalanche. Debris pelted her back, the dust choking her throat, plunging the switching house into a blinding fog of gray ash.

Through the settling smoke, the front doors were kicked inward with a heavy, rhythmic thud.

Three tactical operatives dressed in unmarked gray winter camo swept in, their assault rifles mounted with infrared illuminators. Behind them, stepping delicately over the burning timber in custom insulated boots, stood Clara Vance.

She wore a long, charcoal wool coat, her pale hair pulled back into a severe knot. Her face was identical to the portrait Ethan kept on his mantel, yet stripped entirely of humanity. Her eyes were sharp, calculating, void of sentiment.

“Check the rubble,” Clara ordered, her voice cutting through the hiss of burning magnesium. “Noah has to be intact. If his vocal cords are crushed, the data is lost.”

“He’s not in the rubble, Clara,” a voice rasped from the shadows.

Clara froze. She turned slowly.

Margaret emerged from behind the ruined iron workbench, covered in white concrete dust like a vengeful specter, Thomas’s .38 snub-nosed revolver leveled directly at Clara’s heart.

“Mother,” Clara sighed, her lips curling into a cold, patronizing smile. “You always did have the constitution of an old draft horse. Where is my son?”

“He is with a father who loved him enough to mourn you,” Margaret said, cocking the hammer of the revolver with a crisp, terrifying click. “And he is far beyond your reach.”

Clara didn’t flinch. She took a slow step forward, ignoring the red-hot embers beneath her boots. “Shoot me, and the kill-switch on my satellite link uploads Noah’s full profile, identity, and facial recognition to every underground broker on the dark web. He will be hunted every hour of his life until he is fifteen.”

Clara tilted her head, her smile vanishing. “You won't pull that trigger, Mother. You didn't pull it on Father, and you won't pull it on me.”
