Chapter 42 - THE ELEVEN PODS OF SECTOR SEVEN

Ethan’s grip tightened so fiercely that Noah let out a soft whimper. “We have to run, Mom. The fire stairs to the ambulance bay are still clear. We take my truck and we drive until the GPS stops working.”

“Drive where?” Margaret fired back, her eyes fixed on the steaming hatchway. Her tactical training from twenty years in federal logistics screamed the brutal truth: “If this relay is broadcasting to a offshore network, every toll booth, every highway scanner, every traffic camera from here to Bangor is already flagging our faces. Noah is the receiver, Ethan. If we run blind, we’re just leading whatever is down there straight into an open field.”

As if in answer to her words, the wailing from the hatch shifted. It wasn't human crying; it was an acoustic loop, patterned in five-tone intervals designed to disrupt neurological balance. Noah began to shudder violently, his hands pressing hard against his small ears.

“Make it stop!” the boy screamed, tears streaming down his cheeks. “The red doors are opening, Grandma! The metal ladies are giving them the needles!”

Margaret lunged forward. She snatched Clara’s access lanyard and the titanium drive from the corpse’s neck, slipping the strap over her own shoulder. She then drew her weapon, racking the slide with a clean, lethal click. “Ethan, you stay behind me. We don’t run into the dark without knowing what has the trigger.”

“Are you insane?” Ethan shouted over the escalating hum of the subterranean generators. “You want to go *down*?”

“I want to shut the main breaker before these things reach the surface!” Margaret snapped, her eyes ablaze with the fury of a grandmother pushed past every human limit. “You think whatever was built under this hospital is going to let you drive away? Look at Noah! He’s tracking them!”

It was true. Noah’s head was tilted at an unnatural angle, his gaze locked into the steam pouring from the hatch. His lips were moving silently, mimicking words he couldn't possibly understand: *Sector seven... saline flush... initiate sequence...*

Ethan swallowed hard, his face pale as death. He looked at his son, then at his mother. The hesitation vanished, replaced by the grim realization that their escape had ended the moment Clara pressed that button. “I’m right behind you,” he whispered.

Margaret stepped to the edge of the blown hatch. A steel industrial ladder descended into a vertical concrete silo, illuminated by stark amber emergency beacons. Fifty feet down, a catwalk stretched over an enormous underground cavern—a facility that no city blueprint had ever recorded.

As Margaret began her descent into the steam, her flashlight beam cut through the vapor, revealing what lay beneath. Suspended along the reinforced walls of the cavern were eleven cylindrical acrylic pods, bathed in pale blue nutrient broth.

Inside ten of them, tiny, pale silhouettes floating in stasis stirred awake.

Inside the eleventh, the glass was shattered from the inside out, and the pod was empty.
