Chapter 17 - Into the Viper's Nest

The Vance-Sterling chemical depot loomed against the gray sky like a rotting carcass of rusted steel and cracked masonry. Located along the fog-drenched banks of the Black River, the facility had been decommissioned five years ago after the corporate buyout.

Margaret drove Ethan’s pickup truck through the rusted gates, the chains hanging broken and limp. Her headlights cut through the swirling fog, illuminating the cavernous entrance of the main warehouse.

She turned off the ignition.

Silence swallowed the truck, save for the clicking of the cooling engine.

Margaret took a deep breath. She reached beneath the driver's seat, pulled out a small, steel revolver that had belonged to her late husband, and tucked it into the deep pocket of her wool overcoat. She stepped out into the biting wind.

"I'm here, Vanessa!" Margaret shouted, her voice echoing off the corrugated iron walls of the vast, hollow complex.

High above on the catwalk, a spotlight abruptly flared to life, blinding her.

"Right on time, Grandma," Vanessa’s voice purred over the facility’s archaic PA system. "Walk down the main ramp to Level 2. Keep your hands where the cameras can see them. One wrong twitch, and Noah loses a finger."

Margaret walked steadily down the concrete ramp into the subterranean belly of the facility. The air smelled of sulfur, damp mold, and ancient chemical residue. Water dripped rhythmically in the darkness.

At the bottom of the ramp, two heavily armed men in black tactical gear patted her down with brutal efficiency. They found the revolver in her coat and tossed it aside with a clatter.

"Clean," one muttered into an earpiece.

They shoved Margaret through heavy blast doors into the central laboratory.

The room was vast, illuminated by temporary halogen floodlights. In the center sat an industrial server rack connected to a military laptop. Tied to a heavy steel chair beside the console was Noah. A strip of gray duct tape covered his mouth, his wide eyes red and terrified.

When Noah saw Margaret, a muffled, desperate whimper escaped his throat.

"Shh, my sweet boy," Margaret said softly, taking a step toward him. "Grandma is here. You're going to be okay."

"Don't take another step," a voice barked from the shadows.

A man stepped into the light. Silver-haired, perfectly groomed, wearing a tailored three-piece suit beneath a cashmere coat: Arthur Sterling, the former CEO of Vance-Sterling Pharmaceuticals.

And standing at his side, holding a biometric scanner wired to the laptop, was Vanessa.
