Chapter 38 - The Red Room

Laboratory 304 was not a standard hospital room. It was a soundproof, Faraday-caged enclosure lined with lead-shielded walls and racks of military-grade processing servers. In the center of the room sat an acrylic containment pod connected to hundreds of fiber-optic cables—the exact replica of the high-tech crib from Noah’s nursery, but ten times larger.

The door hissed open.

Margaret stepped inside, her gun raised, pushing Vance ahead of her.

Sitting in a high-backed leather chair behind the main diagnostic console was Clara.

She had cleaned the blood from her face. She wore a tailored black coat, her hair pulled back into a severe, elegant bun. On the console beside her sat a cup of steaming chamomile tea and a silenced SIG Sauer pistol.

“I knew you’d take the steam tunnels, Mother,” Clara said smoothly, not even turning around. “Grandpa’s blueprints were digitized into the hospital archives three years ago. I’ve known about that coal chute since before Noah was born.”

Margaret didn't flinch. She kept her weapon pointed directly at Clara’s temple. “Step away from the console, Clara. Disconnect the dampener and hand over the bypass shunt.”

Clara slowly turned her chair. Her eyes were empty, glowing with the chilling fanaticism of someone who had long since surrendered their humanity to ambition.

“You don't understand what Noah is, do you?” Clara whispered. “You think he’s a child. He isn't a child anymore, Margaret. The moment that mesh activated at three o'clock this morning, his human synaptic functions were rewritten. He is no longer your grandson. He is the first organic transceiver for the global tactical grid. His mind is processing satellite telemetry right now.”

She pointed to a bank of high-resolution monitors on the wall.

Across twelve screens, thermal maps of naval fleets, airspace corridors, and military bases flickered at blinding speeds. And in the lower corner of every single feed was a tiny, pulsing digital signature: *SUBJECT: NOAH — CORE TEMP: 104.2 F.*

“He’s burning out, Clara!” Margaret shouted, tears of pure rage filling her eyes. “His brain is frying! Look at his core temperature! You’re killing your own son!”

“Sacrifice is the price of evolution,” Clara said coldly. “And the buyers are already landing on the roof.”
