Chapter 33 - The Doctor with Dirty Hands

The culvert emptied into a desolate industrial storm drain bordering the edge of the abandoned chemical district. Thomas hijacked an idling utility truck from a municipal depot while Ethan wrapped Noah in his own wool coat, shivering uncontrollably.

Clara had vanished into the chaos of the train yard, swallowed by her private security team. But she had left behind a breadcrumb that Margaret’s photographic memory refused to ignore: the serial number stamped on the micro-receiver in Noah’s neck matched a patent application she had glimpsed among Ethan’s files weeks ago—signed by Dr. Arthur Vance, the chief pediatric neurologist at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Twenty minutes later, the utility truck smashed through the rear security gate of Dr. Vance’s private suburban estate on the outskirts of Oakridge.

The house was dark, shrouded in manicured pine trees, isolated from neighbors. Margaret kicked through the French patio doors, the safety off on her revolver. Ethan followed with Noah in his arms.

A man in a silk dressing gown stepped out from the darkened study, holding a crystal tumbler of scotch. Dr. Arthur Vance was sixty years old, silver-haired, with the polished face of a philanthropist and the dead eyes of an accountant.

“Margaret,” Vance said softly, not even spilling his drink. “I told Clara you were too stubborn to die quietly.”

Margaret leveled her gun directly between Vance’s eyes. “Sit down, Arthur, before I blow your pedigree all over your imported wallpaper.”

Ethan stepped into the light, pulling back Noah’s collar to expose the pulsing red nodule under the child’s skin. “You did this. You stood there at his six-month checkup, told me he had an inner ear infection, and you put a military surveillance chip in my son!”

Vance took a slow sip of scotch, utterly unfazed by the gun in Margaret’s hand. “Your son was born with a rare neuro-conductive anomaly, Ethan. His brain produces an unprecedented level of low-frequency synaptic resonance. Clara didn't sell him for money. She partnered with the Department of Defense to create the first human biological relay node. Your boy can intercept encrypted satellite broadcasts without a headset. He is a living, breathing cryptographic key.”

Margaret stepped forward, thrusting the muzzle of the revolver hard against Vance’s cheekbone until the skin bruised. “You have five minutes to get your surgical kit from your bag, Arthur. You take it out. Or I take your brain out with this trigger.”
