Chapter 19 - The Thunder of Retribution

*CRACK!*

A high-velocity rifle shot shattered the reinforced glass of the second-story observation booth above the lab.

The security guard aiming at Margaret collapsed instantly, struck through the shoulder.

Before anyone could react, flashbang grenades cascaded down from the ventilation shafts, exploding with deafening concussions and blinding white light.

Sterling screamed, clutching his eyes. Vanessa shrieked in terror as the blast knocked her to the floor.

Through the smoke, Ethan dropped from an industrial catwalk fifteen feet above, landing with the ferocity of a demon. He didn't hesitate. He tackled the second armed guard, driving him into the concrete with crushing force, disarming him in a spray of blood and shattered teeth.

Thomas materialized from the southern corridor, his tactical carbine sweeping the room. "Drop your weapons! State Police! On the ground now!"

Margaret didn't waste a second. She scrambled across the concrete floor, throwing her body over Noah to shield him from ricochets. She ripped the duct tape from his mouth and tore the cords binding his small arms.

"Grandma! Daddy!" Noah wailed, burying his face into Margaret's chest.

"I’ve got you, my darling! You’re safe!" Margaret cried, tears finally breaking free.

Across the room, Vanessa scrambled on her hands and knees toward the laptop, desperately trying to yank the external hard drive free. "It's mine! The money is mine!"

Ethan stepped in front of her.

His face was an unreadable mask of cold, absolute fury.

Vanessa looked up, terrified, backing away against the server rack. "Ethan... baby, please! Sterling made me do it! He threatened my family! You know I loved you, Ethan! Please don't let them kill me!"

"You watched my son scream behind that door," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a deathly whisper. "You let him starve in the dark."

Ethan didn't strike her. Instead, he grabbed the laptop, smashed the hard drive under his heavy work boot until the plastic and silicon were pulverized into useless dust, and threw Vanessa hard against the concrete floor.

"You're going to prison for the rest of your miserable life," Ethan growled.

Thomas had Sterling pinned to the wall, plastic zip-ties biting into the billionaire’s wrists. "Arthur Sterling, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, and child abduction."

The sound of sirens began wailing in the distance—dozens of state and federal cruisers converging on the river depot.

Margaret held Noah tightly, kissing his tear-streaked cheeks as Ethan knelt beside them, wrapping his powerful arms around both of his loved ones.

The nightmare seemed finally over.
