Chapter 39 - The Mother Who Never Was

The sound of heavy helicopter rotors thumped directly above the hospital roof, rattling the fluorescent ceiling panels. The extraction team from Apex Defense had arrived.
“Arthur,” Clara commanded without looking at him. “Bring Noah in. Place him in the pod.”
Vance stood frozen between the two women.
“Arthur,” Margaret said, her voice low and lethal. “Look at that screen. Do you want to be remembered as the monster who butchered a four-year-old boy for a defense contract?”
“He doesn't have a choice,” Clara smiled, pulling a remote detonator from her pocket. “Every floor of this pediatric wing has been rigged with thermite charges. If Noah isn't secured in the pod before the transport lands, this entire hospital collapses into the street. Hundreds of sick children, Margaret. Gone in seconds. Just give me my son, and the rest of the building lives.”
The door behind them burst open.
Ethan stumbled in, carrying Noah’s limp, feverish body in his arms. The boy was barely breathing, his lips turning white.
“Clara, stop!” Ethan cried out, falling to his knees before his wife. “Look at him! Look at your baby! He called for you! In the truck, he whispered your name!”
For a microsecond, a flicker of hesitation—a ghost of genuine human grief—rippled across Clara’s polished porcelain features. She looked down at the boy in Ethan’s arms. Her breath hitched.
“Ethan...” she whispered, her fingers loosening on the detonator.
Margaret saw the opening.
She moved with the lethal speed born of pure survival instinct. Margaret slapped Clara’s gun aside and tackled her across the glass conference table. The detonator flew across the room, sliding across the slick tile floor directly toward Vance.
“Vance! Grab it!” Margaret screamed, pinning Clara down by her throat.
May you like
Clara hissed like a wild animal, her fingernails tearing across Margaret’s face, leaving deep, bloody gouges. “You won’t stop this! You can't kill what’s already programmed!”
Ethan lunged for the terminal, hooking the bypass cable into the pod's dampener, while Noah let out a bloodcurdling, inhuman shriek as the neural mesh began to discharge.
