Chapter 29 - Shadows on the Horizon

Back in Denver, the morning rain had cleared, leaving the crisp mountain air sparkling under a bright, indifferent Colorado sky. Inside Erica’s forensics lab, the atmosphere of celebration had given way to intense, focused concentration as the team reviewed the final data extractions obtained from Marcus Vance’s seized micro-SD card.

Erica sat slumped in her ergonomic chair, staring at a complex global asset map that covered three large monitors. Her dark circles were deeper, but her expression was one of profound analytical satisfaction.

"Well, the domestic cleanup is official," Erica announced, turning her chair to face Jason and Liam. "The DOJ has formally seized every domestic subsidiary, shell corporation, and real estate asset belonging to Arthur Vance. The restitution funds for the military charities are fully locked into secure federal escrow, and the first wave of family support checks has cleared."

Jason let out a long breath, leaning against the edge of the workbench. For the first time in weeks, the tension in his shoulders had genuinely eased. "We actually did it. My father is behind bars, Marcus is facing decades for conspiracy and financial obstruction, and the people he hurt are finally getting what they’re owed."

Liam, however, remained standing near the panoramic window, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes narrowed as he stared out at the bustling city traffic below. He hadn't touched his coffee in an hour.

Jason noticed Liam’s silence and frowned. "You don't look convinced, Liam. What’s bothering you? The data matched the cryptographic tokens. The ledgers are clean."

"The ledgers we knew about are clean," Liam replied quietly, his voice carrying an edge of cold caution. He turned around, walking over to the workbench and tapping the screen where Erica’s forensic logs displayed the decrypted transaction traces from Marcus’s card. "Look at the routing metadata on these transfer packets, Erica. When Marcus tried to execute that secondary shadow transfer before we caught him at the federal holding facility, where did the ping originate from?"

Erica furrowed her brow, zooming in on the packet header code. "It... it originated from a secondary IP gateway routed through a private telecommunications relay in Geneva, Switzerland."

"Switzerland," Jason repeated, a sudden knot forming in his stomach. "We thought the Swiss servers were just backup nodes for Arthur’s domestic slush funds."

"They weren't backups," Liam said firmly, his tactical instincts flaring. "They were an entirely separate operational network managed by someone with higher-level security clearances than Marcus—someone who watched Arthur fall without lifting a finger to help him."

Erica’s eyes widened as she quickly typed a rapid query into the global corporate registry database. "Wait... let me check the historical corporate filings for Vance Global’s international subsidiaries..."

The screen flashed, pulling up a classified internal organizational chart that had been heavily redacted until decrypted by the recent DOJ sweep. A single name appeared at the top of the international division: Viktor Vance.

"Arthur’s brother," Erica whispered, the color draining from her face. "He hasn't been seen in North America in over twelve years. Intelligence circles believed he was operating independent private security contracts overseas in Europe and the Middle East."

"He’s not just operating private security," Liam said, his voice dropping into a low, resolute register as he grabbed his jacket from the back of the chair. "He’s positioning himself to take over what's left of the global grid. And if we don't move fast, the war we thought we won in the Rockies was just the opening skirmish."
