Chapter 21 - The Midnight Breach

The frozen silence of the Roosevelt National Forest was abruptly shattered by the dull, rhythmic thud of twin-rotor helicopter blades cutting through the dense blizzard overhead.

Inside the hunting cabin, Jason and I froze. The titanium cryptographic token was still warm in Jason’s hand, its green LED pulsing steadily after Erica’s successful override. But the sudden arrival of heavy aerial transport meant Arthur Vance’s contingencies ran much deeper—and closer—than we had anticipated.

"They didn't just send local security contractors," I said, my tactical instincts flaring as I rushed to the reinforced window, peering through the frost-rimmed glass.

Below the ridge, two matte-black utility vehicles with high-intensity infrared searchlights had broken through the perimeter fence, ploughing directly through the snowdrifts toward the cabin's front approach. Men in heavy tactical gear, unbranded and heavily armed, were fast-roping from a hovering chopper into the clearing.

"How did they track us so fast?" Jason asked, his voice tight with sudden dread as he clutched the hardware wallet to his chest. "The satellite relay was encrypted through three separate proxy layers."

"They didn't track the relay," I said, my jaw tightening as I unholstered a sidearm from the restrained operative on the floor. "They tracked the hardware signature of the token itself. These cold storage wallets have active telemetry ping capabilities built into their proprietary firmware. The moment Erica unlocked the protocol, it beaconed our exact coordinates."

"Then we’re sitting ducks," Jason said, looking around the cabin’s single-exit layout. "If they breach the doors, we won't have anywhere to run."

"Not yet," I replied, my military background taking over command. "Arthur wanted this token back intact because without it, his offshore decentralized funds remain permanently locked in limbo. That means they won't blow the cabin to pieces—they want to take us alive and repossess the hardware."

"Which gives us a window," Jason said, his eyes catching fire with a sudden, determined resolve. He wasn't the terrified corporate heir anymore; he was a man fighting for his absolute freedom. "What's the play, Liam?"

"We split," I said swiftly. "You take the secondary ridge trail leading down to the hidden ATV cache behind the woodpile. Take the token straight to the extraction point at the forestry checkpoint where Erica’s backup team is waiting. I’ll stay here, draw their fire, and buy you the ten minutes you need to clear the mountain corridor."

"I'm not leaving you here to face a black-ops hit squad alone," Jason snapped, stepping forward.

"This isn't a debate, Jason!" I cut him off, grabbing his shoulders and holding his gaze with absolute authority. "If they catch both of us, the token is gone, the smart contracts reset at dawn, and your father wins everything. Protect the mission. Go!"

Before Jason could argue further, the front heavy oak door shuddered under a massive, thunderous impact as a heavy-duty tactical battering ram struck the frame. Wood splinters flew across the room.

Jason swallowed hard, his jaw set in a hard line. He nodded once, spun around, and dove through the rear pantry window, disappearing into the blinding white fury of the blizzard.

I pulled the slide of my sidearm back, checked the chamber, and took up position behind the heavy stone fireplace. The front door blew inward with a deafening crash, and the room instantly flooded with blinding tactical flashlights and armed men shouting razor-sharp commands.

"Secure the perimeter! Clear the rooms!"

I fired two warning shots into the oak rafters, kicking off the final battle for the Vance empire.
