Chapter 18 - The Digital Ghost

The digital forensics lab on the subterranean level of Erica’s building was a stark contrast to the luxurious emptiness of the 35th-floor executive suite. Rows of high-powered server towers hummed with a low, relentless vibration, their cooling fans casting a pale blue glow across banks of multiple monitors. Coils of fiber-optic cables snaked across the floor, connecting decryption units, hardware wallets, and secure terminals.

Erica sat hunched over her primary workstation, her fingers clacking furiously against her mechanical keyboard as streams of hexadecimal code cascaded down the center screen. Jason and I stood behind her, watching the real-time data visualizer map out the complex web of offshore transactions Arthur’s phone call had hinted at.

"He wasn't bluffing about the contingencies," Erica said without taking her eyes off the monitor. She hit a final key combination, and a complex network graph bloomed across the screen, connecting dozens of anonymous shell entities to a single, deeply buried master trust account. "Look at this structure. It’s not routed through Liechtenstein or the Cayman Islands anymore. He shifted the core capital pool into an automated decentralized liquidity protocol three weeks before we raided the office."

"A decentralized protocol?" Jason frowned, leaning over the back of her chair. "You mean cryptocurrency and smart contracts?"

"Exactly," Erica nodded grimly. "Smart contracts don't care about federal asset-freeze warrants. Once a multisig smart contract is deployed on-chain with a time-delayed release mechanism, no judge, no prosecutor, and no bank can reverse it. The capital unlocks automatically on a predetermined block timestamp—which happens to be midnight tonight."

I felt my jaw tighten. "Where does the capital go when it unlocks?"

"That’s the terrifying part," Erica said, bringing up a secondary decryption log. "It doesn't go back to Arthur's personal accounts. It funnels directly into an anonymous PAC and a series of super-PACs funding state-level judicial campaigns across Colorado and neighboring districts. In simple terms? He’s attempting to buy the very judicial system that’s supposed to try him. If those funds clear tonight, he’ll have enough political and legal leverage to force a plea deal that dismisses all federal charges on technicalities."

"Can we block it?" Jason asked, his voice tight with rising panic. "Can the feds shut down the smart contract?"

"Not from the outside," Erica replied, shaking her head. "Decentralized ledgers are immutable. To stop the execution before midnight, we need the master private key—the root administrative seed phrase that authorizes any modifications or emergency freezes on the protocol."

"Where is the seed phrase?" I asked immediately.

Erica pulled up a secure metadata file extracted from Arthur’s personal laptop seized during the raid. "According to the file encryption headers, it’s not stored on the corporate servers. It’s split into three encrypted fragments stored on physical offline hardware tokens—cold storage wallets."

"Where are the tokens?" Jason pressed.

"According to the asset registry, they aren't in the office safe," Erica said, her expression darkening. "They're distributed across three separate physical locations known only to Arthur’s inner circle: his private estate in Cherry Hills, a safety deposit box at a secure federal credit union downtown, and... an old family hunting cabin up in the Roosevelt National Forest near Estes Park."

I exchanged a hard, knowing look with Jason. The hunting cabin. It was the place where our father used to take us during our teenage years—not for family bonding, but to test our endurance, our obedience, and our tolerance for psychological pressure under freezing conditions. It was his private sanctuary of control.

"We don't have time to hit all three locations before midnight," I said, checking my tactical watch. It was already 3:00 PM. A fresh winter storm advisory was flashing across the local news broadcast on the corner monitor, warning of heavy mountain snow squalls and zero visibility along the Estes Park highway corridor. "And if we notify the federal marshals now, bureaucratic red tape and jurisdictional warrants will take twelve hours to process. By then, the smart contracts will have executed."

"Then we go get the token ourselves," Jason said, his voice dropping all hesitation. He stood up straight, his posture reflecting a sudden, striking surge of resolve. "I know the hunting cabin better than anyone. I know where Arthur hid every backup key and ledger book when we were kids."

"It's a trap, Jason," I warned, stepping in front of him. "Arthur is sitting in a holding cell, but his operatives are still active out there. If he anticipated someone coming after those cold storage keys, that cabin is going to be locked down or watched."

"If we don't go, the entire case collapses by midnight, and he walks free," Jason countered, holding my gaze with absolute, unyielding conviction. "You taught me that family isn't a balance sheet, Liam. But tonight, protecting what's right isn't about family—it's about finishing the mission. I'm coming with you."

I looked at him for a long moment, seeing not the fearful younger brother who had signed fraudulent compliance waivers three years ago, but a man who had finally broken his chains and was ready to stand in the fire.

"All right," I said, clapping a firm hand onto his shoulder. "Erica, stay here, monitor the blockchain mempool, and keep the federal prosecutors on standby. If we don't ping you by 2100 hours with the override code, you sound the alarm directly to the U.S. Attorney General's office."

May you like

"Be careful, Liam," Erica said quietly, handing me a heavy-duty encrypted satellite communicator. "The weather up in the mountains is turning lethal, and Arthur's people won't hesitate to play dirty."
