Chapter 27 - The Breach at Federal Holding

The federal holding facility on 14th Street was a fortress of concrete, steel, and bureaucratic indifference. Rain had begun to mix with the melting mountain snow, slicking the reinforced perimeter gates in a freezing, miserable drizzle. Inside the sterile processing lobby, Marcus Vance sat on a metal bench, clutching a manila envelope containing his temporary release papers and federal immunity authorization.

His attorney, a high-priced corporate defense specialist named Harrison, stood nearby, tapping impatiently on his smartphone.

"Your transport is idling outside, Marcus," Harrison muttered without looking up. "Once we hit the state line, your new passport and offshore credentials will be waiting. You played your cards right, but we need to move before the Assistant U.S. Attorney realizes what’s buried in the secondary asset disclosures."

Marcus smirked, standing up and smoothing down his tailored suit jacket. Despite the chaos of Arthur’s downfall, Marcus believed he had successfully outmaneuvered both the DOJ and the Vance brothers. "Arthur always thought he was the smartest man in the room," Marcus said softly, adjusting his cuffs. "He didn't realize the architecture of the empire belonged to the person who maintained the code."

He turned toward the secure exit corridor—only to find his path blocked by two figures stepping smoothly out from the shadows of the security checkpoint.

Liam stood with his hands casually resting at his sides, his eyes cold and razor-sharp. Beside him, Jason held a ruggedized Panasonic military tablet displaying a live, flashing packet-capture stream directly linked to Erica’s lab.

Marcus froze, his color draining instantly. "You... you have no jurisdiction here. This is a federal facility. I am under official DOJ protection."

"You were under protection, Marcus, until Erica cross-referenced your signature against the shadow ledger transaction logs thirty seconds ago," Jason said, his voice steady, carrying an authority that left no room for argument. He stepped forward, holding the tablet out so Marcus could see the incriminating data stream scrolling in real-time. "You didn't turn state's evidence in good faith. You held back the master keys to the secondary mesh network so you could inherit what’s left of my father’s empire."

Panic flickered across Marcus's face. He looked frantically toward the security desk, but the guards had already received a priority override ping from federal cyber command.

"Harrison! Call the detail!" Marcus shouted, turning to bolt back toward the intake holding cells.

Before Marcus could take two steps, Liam moved with blinding, fluid speed. He closed the distance, grabbing Marcus by the shoulder and spinning him cleanly against the reinforced concrete pillar, pinning him with controlled, professional force.

"The game is over, Marcus," Liam whispered near his ear, lifting the manila folder and sliding a small, encrypted micro-SD card straight out of the lining of Marcus’s suit jacket lining. "No offshore escape. No shadow ledger. You're staying right here to explain to the federal judge why you tried to rob the restitution fund."

As federal marshals swarmed into the lobby in response to Erica’s emergency override signal, Marcus slumped against the pillar, defeated. But even as the heavy steel cuffs clicked around his wrists, Liam couldn't shake a lingering, cold intuition: Arthur Vance had anticipated even this betrayal.
